2003 Pathfinder District Pinewood Derby Race Off

The district race off occurred on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Mead Junior High in Elk Grove Village. Three hundred and five (305) scouts participated with one hundred fifty-one (151) different boys receiving a trophy or medal. The first place winner for speed in our district was Randy from Pack 200, chartered by the Concerned Parents of Hanover Highlands School in Hanover Park. Second place went to Jon from Pack 493, chartered by the Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates Lions Club and third place went to Cody from Pack 200, chartered by the Concerned Parents of Hanover Highlands School. Congratulations boys!!!

The patch design winner this year was Brad from Pack 392, chartered by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 71 in Elk Grove Village. This is the second year in a row for Brad. Congratulations Brad!!! The patches turned out very well with Brad's design and look very nice on the boys brag vests.

In all, scouts from twenty-five (25) different packs participated in the event and every pack had at least one award winner. Summary sheets will be handed out at roundtable with the results from the race. The Pathfinder District website (http://units.nwsc.org/users/pathfinder/pathfind.htm) has already posted pictures of the event.

I would like to thank all the packs that volunteered their tracks. These packs were 194, 196, 297, 491 and 493. Thank you very much for your time and energy. Additionally, I want to thank all the other volunteers for their help with our race. Without all of the volunteers this event could not have occurred. It takes a tremendous amount of cooperation between the volunteers to make things run as smooth as possible and they all did a great job. Once again, THANK YOU to all who helped!!!

If you should have any questions, suggestions or just need additional information, please feel free to contact Steven Fleck at sfleck1@attbi.com.

Membership Monthly

Think Spring! It's time that everyone is thinking and planning for their Pack or Troops Spring Recruitment. At the April Roundtable (during splits) there will be a special session regarding recruitment. Please make sure that your Membership Committee Chairperson or another representative from your Pack or Troop attends this roundtable to pick-up recruitment information.

The Pathfinder recharter numbers are in and we are currently behind on our membership goal by 561 youth. We all need to do whatever is possible to reach out to the boys who did not recharter as well as boys who have not been involved with scouting in the past and encourage them to join your Packs and Troops.

Pathfinder Vice Chair of Membership

The President's Volunteer Service Awards Program

Yet another "gem" I've come across in my web browsing...the President's Volunteer Service Awards program. This program is to be instituted in Spring 2003 and then continued year after year to reward volunteerism.

My guess is most of you in PTA, Boy Scouts, soccer, etc. can already step right up and claim your award (as soon as they get that process in place).

Here are the criteria:
- If you are 15 or older, you can earn a President's Volunteer Service Award if you completed 100 hours of volunteer service in the prior calendar year.
- If you are between the ages of 5 and 14, you can earn a President's Volunteer Service Award if you have completed 50 hours of volunteer service in the prior calendar year.
- If you are a family or group of 2 or more people, you can earn a President's Volunteer Service Award if you have collectively completed 200 hours of volunteer service within the prior calendar year.

Each individual or family winner will receive:
-A personalized certificate of recognition;
-A letter of congratulations from the President of the United States; and
-Your choice of a specially designed product (such as a notebook, shirt or hat) that is embossed with the President's Volunteer Service Award logo.

Comments on Proper Uniform

We know leaders and scouts take pride in wearing the scout uniform. It is something to unify us and set us apart from the rest.

Wearing our uniforms properly enhances that pride. Proper means:
1. Button and tuck those shirts in.
2. Wear the Merit Badge or Order of the Arrow sash. These two sashes are not worn together. The Order of the Arrow sash is at official OA functions or when you are representing the OA. At Eagle Courts of Honor, a Scouts wears his merit badge sash, not the OA sash (unless he is officially there representing the OA).

If you have any questions on the way the scout uniform should be worn, please look at a uniform inspection sheet or the BSA Insignia Guide. Let's put the right foot forward.
