COUNCIL NEWS

The summer programs are in full operation and have proven to be a great opportunity for many of the Scouts and leaders who availed themselves of the programs offered.

DAY CAMP
Nearly four hundred Cub Scouts attended the five sessions offered at the Little City location, including the new three day sessions. An additional hundred Scouts participated at the Parkview School location in Morton Grove. The Knights of the Roundtable theme was quite popular with the attendees. Advancement opportunities for participants were given to the adult leaders each week. With the evaluations being reviewed, the management is looking forward to next summer. Be warned that Pirates aren't only in the Caribbean (or Pittsburgh). They will be coming to the Northwest Suburban Council.

RESIDENT CAMP
Pterodactyl, T-Rex, Brontosaurus, and other prehistoric denizens would have felt right at home at Camp Bedrock as our own “Fred and Wilma” presented a Resident Camp program which was anything but Stone-Age. Mosquitoes proved to be the only pests which made themselves evident during the camp. Over 500 participants proved themselves up to the challenges of the Neolithic theme for the camp. The addition of the Climbing Tower to the program was a big hit and proved challenging to more than one Scout (or leader). The “mammoth” success of the Resident Camp program this summer established another era in the annals of Cub Scout Camping.

NAPOWAN
This has proven to be a banner year for the Napowan Adventure Base with more than 120 units, more than 2300 Scouts, and nearly 600 leaders in attendance. Facility and program improvements were key factors in the planning and operation of the camp program this summer. Spearheaded by Camp Director Glenn West, numerous changes were incorporated to enhance the summer camp experience for all attendees. Careful attention is being given to evaluations with an eye to needed modifications for next summer.

BLUE GOOSE ADVENTURE BASE
This revamped program was a huge success this past summer as more than 200 Scouts and adults participated in six different types of high adventure opportunities. Sixteen trips roamed the wilds of Wisconsin and Michigan testing the mettle of the participants and their guides. All returned with a better understanding of themselves and their capabilities and an appreciation of their accomplishments. The success of this program will result in an expansion of the program as additional opportunities are being developed for next year.

CAMP STAFF INTERVIEWS
Staff applications for positions at all of the summer camps are being accepted. We are looking for people, both young and experienced, who are looking for a great way to spend their summer (and possibly get paid for it, too). Positions are still available at all camp locations for interested and motivated persons willing to help provide an exciting summer camp program to the youth we serve.

Applications for camp staff positions are available online at the council website- www.nwsc.org – or by contacting Marty at the Council Service Center at 847-635-9404 or mschultz@bsamail.org.

WEBELOS WEEKEND AT NAPOWAN
More than 500 Webelos Scouts together with their adult partners experienced the opportunities available at Camp Napowan over the three Webelos Weekends. For most of them this was their first experience at a Scout Camp seeing first-hand what Scout Camp is really like. For a lot of the parents, it was a chance to revisit the Scout camp of their youth and share their experiences with their sons.

WEEKEND CAMPING INFO
It's not too soon to plan your Labor Day camping plans. Plan now to spend the holiday weekend at Camp Lakota with your family enjoying the facilities and program opportunities offered by the camp.

Camp Lakota will host the Labor Day Family Camp from August 29 to September 1st. Information and registration form for this opportunity is available online at the Council Website or by contacting Marty at the Council Office at 847-635-9404 or at mschultz@bsamail.org.

WOOD BADGE
Openings still exist for participation in the 2003 Wood Badge course being held on August 22 – 24 and September 12 – 14 at Camp Lakota. This is a great way for a “seasoned” leader to discover new techniques to communicate with and provide a quality program for the youth they serve. More information on this course can be found in the Council website at www.nwsc.org or by contacting the Council Office at 847-824-6880.

FALL FELLOWSHIP / WORK WEEKEND
Looking for something to do September 19 – 21? The Lakota Lodge #175, Order of the Arrow and the Wilderness Engineers cordially invite you to join hundreds of other dedicated Scouts and Scouters at Camp Lakota for the Fall Fellowship. Plans are in motion to help prepare the camp for a busy winter camping season. This weekend of fun, fellowship, and hard work is fulfilling and rewarding for all who will avail themselves of the camp over the next few months. Registration forms are available online or from the Council Service Center at 847-824-6880.

NATIONAL SCOUT JAMBOREE 2005
The Council Vice President for Boy Scouts, Hugh Smart, is pleased to announce the formation of the planning committee for the 2005 National Scout Jamboree contingent from the Northwest Suburban Council. Scott Ratter from Troop 964 in Lake Zurich has accepted the assignment as Committee Chairman and Contingent Coordinator for this event.

Hill, Virginia. Preliminary details are being worked out now and the Jamboree committee is being selected. An application form is attached for those who want to secure a spot now. Leaders desiring to fill one of the 16 Troop leadership positions are asked to apply using one of these applications. Also attached is a fact sheet highlighting some facts regarding the Jamboree.
