Pathfinder's Friends of Scouting Kickoff Meeting

Calling all units!!!  By now you should have selected your FOS Unit Coordinator.  We would like them to attend our District FOS Kickoff meeting at 6:45 PM on Monday, December 8, 2002 at the LDS Church (same place Roundtable will be at).  We would like every unit's FOS Coordinator to attend this meeting so we can let them know of the exciting changes to FOS this year.  Help us complete your Five Star Unit.

IT'S CHARTER RENEWAL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember the only mandatory Quality Unit requirement you cannot make-up is on time charter.  If you are having problems completing your charters, we have many opportunities for you to get help.  First, on January 31, 2004 we have a Recharter Clinic, this is the best time to turn in charters and get help in finishing them.  Second, the February Roundtable, our friend commissioner staff is there to help you.  Finally, contact your Unit Commissioner or your District Executive.

Let's make our first goal of the year and have everyone in the district turn-in their charters ON TIME.

RECHARTER CLINIC

Saturday, January 31, 2004 is the date of Pathfinder's rechartering clinic.

Bring your completed (or partially complete) recharter list with you to have assistance with the rechartering process.

Bill McGovern and his friendly and helpful commissioner team will be there to assist you.  The time and location will be available at upcoming roundtables and Horatio Happenings.

Pathfinder District Elections

Please thank all of the Pathfinder District volunteers who stepped up to the plate to help us out for another year at the Pathfinder Annual Elections, which were held on Wednesday November 12, 2003.  Overall, we have 6 returning members with 3 new officers as well.

Those returning to the Pathfinder District Officers are:

·        Ray Okigawa, District Chairman

·        Jim Wagner, Vice-Chairman Scouting Power

·        Laura Sikat, Vice-Chairman Membership

·        Robert Weaver, Vice-Chairman Finance

·        Bill Goffinski, Vice-Chairman Community Relations

·        Doug Zubka, Vice-Chairman Training

The new members of the Pathfinder District Officers are:

·        Steven Fleck, Vice-Chairman Cub Scouts

·        John Hozian, Vice-Chairman Boy Scouts

·        Dave Stronz, Vice-Chairman Venturing

At this meeting, the nominating committee also recommended one person for the position of District Commissioner.  That person was:

·        Bill McGovern, District Commissioner

We would also like to thank those who are stepping down at this time from a Pathfinder District Officer position.  They will not be a key leader, but they will still be helping out with the district in a different role.  They are:

·        Dennis Bohm, Vice-Chairman Cub Scouts

·        Dave Dionne, Vice-Chairman Boy Scouts

·        Pat Davis, Vice-Chairman Venturing

·        Rae Stecker, Asst District Chairman

We would like to thank scouts Kevin Burns (Pack 199), Harrison Fleck (Pack 199) and Kaz Teope (Troop 398) who assisted with the district elections by performing the flag ceremonies and also the swearing in of the new officers. We would also like to thank the nominating committee who has worked since August to come up with the slate of district officers, and other positions in the district. The committee was chaired by Jim Wagner, and those on his committee were Rae Stecker, Ray Okigawa, Anna Klimkowicz, Denis DeCamp, Bob Goffinski and Bill Kelley.

As pointed out last evening, there are over 100 positions at the district level in the Pathfinder district.  Many fine individuals are involved in the successful running of the district.  When you are asked to help out, please accept.  All the volunteers are doing the positions not for themselves, but for the scouts in the district.

Membership Monthly

We have been making great strides toward our District Goal of 2% growth in membership. For the second consecutive month we have achieved the monthly goal that Council has established which takes us closer and closer to our year end goal. We are currently at 93.5% of our goal.  It is time for everyone to buckle down and get all of your open applications into the Council office, submit your current roster's to your District Commissioner, and continue to reach out to the youth available to your unit signing them up to Join Scouting today!

If your unit has held a Fall Recruitment Event but experienced low turnout, consider hosting a second recruitment.  Remember – recruiting is a year round activity!  The wonderful flyers that the Council office printed for your Fall Recruitment night can be modified to announce your new event!  Also, consider running an article in your school newsletter inviting boys to your next Pack Night.

How are all of the Troops doing with their Webelos to Boy-Scout Transition plans? Everyone should have been in contact with your feeder Pack's inviting the Webelos to visit your Troop.  Don't wait for them to come to you, contact them today!  Membership is not about only recruiting boys that have never been in Scouting, it is also about retaining the Cub Scouts by having them cross-over to your Troop!

Yes, the Membership Team is still looking for help. Easy, simply, behind the scenes help wanted.  If you know how to dial the phone, you qualify!  Don't hesitate, call me today!

Vice Chair of Membership

Why Wait Till Next Year When This Year's Not Over?

Are you a fan of a great team that hasn't been recognized as a great team for a long time?  Have you ever rooted for a team with hard working, dedicated team members who put in great performances and yet still didn't make it to the championships?  Has your favorite team put out-performed its competition with good performances all throughout the year only to end up with second or third place?  When the season is nearly over, do you say to yourself, "this is the year!" but when the season is you are instead saying, "wait till next year!"

Like a certain popular Chicago sports team, Pathfinder District has all of the attributes needed to be the best of the best, yet, for the past several years, all we ended up with at the end of the year was an "attaboy, nice job, wait till next year."

Well, this is next year.  Pathfinder District is the closest we've been to being recognized as a Quality District in a long time.  We've made it this far and I hate to miss out in Game 7 of the playoffs.

In order to make Quality District, we need the help of all of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing Crew members, and leaders.  If we do this as a team, we can be the ones on top at the end of the year.  I am asking everyone in our district to pitch in a little so that we can be the ones celebrating at the end of the year.

Here's what we need to do during November and December:

Grass roots recruiting:  Please tell your Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing Crew members to recruit their friends and convince them to join your unit.  Like trying out a new restaurant, people are more likely to try it out if they get a good recommendation from a friend.  Put the challenge out to your Scouts to bring their friends in.

Start 2 new Venturing Crews:  If your Boy Scout Troop is experiencing a drop-off in attendance from older Scouts, start a Venturing Crew.  One of the side benefits I have personally seen is that boys who are active in their Venturing Crew tend to become active in their troop as well.  I know many of you have discussed starting a crew, and if you're going to start one, why not now instead of next year?

Tell me if the company you own or work for is prospering.  The economy is finally starting to recover and business owners are becoming more and more optimistic and profitable.  We need over $7,000 to reach our Friends of Scouting goal, and the most likely way to make it is to get a donation from a company.  If you are uncomfortable approaching your boss to ask for a donation for Scouting, let me know and we'll do the legwork.  I see a lot of companies giving a lot of money to dubious causes.  I'd like a fair chance to get money that goes towards one of the most respected programs in the world.

Let's be the ones to come out at the head of the pack this year!

Yours in Scouting,

Ray Okigawa
