2003 National Law Enforcement
FBI/DEA/U.S. Marshal Exploring Leadership Academies
July 5-12, 2003; July 12-19, 2003; and July 20-26, 2003

BACKGROUND

In summer 2003, selected Law Enforcement Explorers will have the unique experience of participating in National Law Enforcement Explorer Leadership Academies conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at FBI at Quantico, the Drug Enforcement Administration at Quantico, and the U.S. Marshal's headquarters in Washington, DC. Participants will be housed at George Washington University and/or Quantico.

ELIGIBILITY

Explorers must complete the application, secure the necessary approvals and submit the application along with a statement of "What Law Enforcement Exploring Has Meant to Me" in no fewer than 500 words. The applicant must be a current participant of Law Enforcement Exploring for no less than 12 months.

 

ACADEMY CONTENT

The focus of the academy will be on leadership and will deal with the dynamics of leadership, motivating others, and effective law enforcement leadership. In addition, some of the highly specialized law enforcement programs offered by various federal law enforcement agencies will be made available including lunch with federal agency directors.

PLAN

Explorers will be selected to attend the leadership academy. The academies will begin with arrival on Saturday, July 5, July 12, or July 19. The instructional portion will last through Friday, July 11, July 18, or July 25, depending on which academy is assigned to the participant.

FEES

The cost for the participants will be transportation to and from Washington, D.C. (Ronald Reagan National Airport), and a $50.00 administration fee. (DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY WITH THE APPLICATION.) Academy Explorers will be expected to cover costs for all breakfasts in Washington, D.C., and some dinners. Housing, most lunches and some dinners, insurance, and fees for the academy will be provided. Explorers arriving early or staying late will be responsible for early/late costs. Of course, spending money and uniform costs are the participant's responsibility. Participants muse be able to ride the Metro or take a cab from the airport to George Washington University. A complete packet will be sent to the selected participants

UNIFORM

Each Explorer must bring one and preferably two post dress uniforms.

DEADLINE

The nomination form with the appropriate certifications must be RECEIVED, not postmarked, in the national office no later than February 19, 2003. Late applications will not be considered.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

Each application will be reviewed by a selection process using law enforcement executives composed of members of the National Law Enforcement Exploring Committee and the applicant will be notified by April 30, 2003, or earlier.

A Look at the National Health Careers Exploring Exposition

Learning for Life and the National Health Careers Exploring Committee will sponsor its second annual National Health Careers Exploring Exposition, July 30-August 3, 2003. The exposition will be held at the Uniformed Services University and the National Institutes of Health, both in Bethesda, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C.

The 3 1/2-day exposition will have participants spending two full days on the campus of the Uniformed Services University and one full day at the National Institutes of Health. Participants will attend interactive workshops and seminars focusing on the variety of health-care career options such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary, allied health, pharmacy, osteopathic, chiropractic, nursing, and podiatry.

The skills and knowledge participant's gain during this exposition will be invaluable in preparing them for college and career success. Participants will also have time for extracurricular activities, including an opening night dinner and dance with live entertainment, a tour of Washington, D.C., and more.

The cost to attend the exposition is $400 per person (both youth and adults), which covers the cost of meals, housing accommodations, and extracurricular activities. Participants will stay at the Hyatt Hotel in Bethesda, Maryland. Participants must cover their own travel costs.

To sign up for the exposition, send the post registration form and the $400 deposit fee to Learning for Life, 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane, P.O. Box 152079, Irving, Texas 75015-2079. The $400 deposit fee will be deducted from the final payments due from each post.
