January 2003 – Signal Hill District

Signal Hill District Achieves Quality District Status!
Congratulations to every volunteer leader in our District for their love of Scouting and ambition to enable Signal Hill District to be so successful in 2002. The District achieved the "Quality District" status, which is the pentacle of what each and every Scouting District in our country, aspires to reach annually. Some of the qualifications for Quality District are to: Increase overall membership by 2%, increasing overall unit count by 2%, achieve our "fair share" of fundraising and having at least 60% of all our units achieve the Quality Unit status. One other bench mark that we were able to accomplish this year was to start 5 new Venture Crews. This is outstanding. A special thanks goes to 2002 District Vice Chair of Venturing, Debbie Keyes, and her husband, Chris Keyes. Debbie and Chris operate a Music Crew and they were able to recently increase their unit's membership by adding many youth to their program and this enabled the District to achieve our membership goals! Another high point was the unselfish financial giving of many families in our District allowing us to raise the highest amount of Family Friends of Scouting dollars in the District's history.

First Aid Meet Results
Our annual 2002 First Aid meet proved to be a very enjoyable event for the many youth and many adult leaders who attended. What a way to engage Scouts in educating them about first aid and possibly equipping them to save someone's life some day. The education they learned will be with them the rest of their lives. Burt Heatherly chaired the event and lead the Boy Scout section. Janet Shah chaired the Cub Scout section while Joanne Bilas assisted her. A heartfelt "thank-you" on behalf of Signal Hill District is extended to Burt, Janet and Joanne for volunteering to assist Scouts on this special day. Every youth participant received a patch during the event and went away with a big smile on his face.

Friends of Scouting Leadership Breakfast Table Hosts Needed
NWSC is once again preparing for another successful and fun “Leadership Breakfast” to lead the way in our 2003 Community Friends of Scouting Campaign. NWSC started this first time event for our council back in February 2002. The Leadership Breakfast is an opportunity for individuals to help us stretch our networking abilities and accurately share the positive scouting story with private individuals, businesspersons and companies not familiar with scouting. The objective of the event is to help further fund NWSC with “new dollars” raised, through the venue of an event being held February 21, 2003 at the Schaumburg Hyatt. The morning will include the dynamic keynote speaking of retired NFL Referee, Mr. Gerry Markbreit.
At this time, Signal Hill is diligently seeking to secure “Table Hosts” to help gain attendance at this event. In brief, a Table Host would be an individual or company that can help secure some friends, colleagues, business partners, vendors, or anyone at all that is willing to come enjoy the breakfast and make a pledge for the BSA to support our Council. If you know of any Table Host prospects, or would be interested yourself, please do not hesitate to call Signal Hill District Director, Pete Stikovich, for further details (847) 854-4225.

Tiger Time: A Pirate's Adventure
This year, over 150 Tigers, plus their partners, sailed over to Barrington Middle School for a Pirate's Adventure. The boys visited 20 stations for games, skill contests and crafts. They also enjoyed a snack while watching a skit and being entertained by a host of pirates. A live parrot even made an appearance.
We had a record number of volunteers turn out to help, which made the event run very smoothly. Older Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Crew members and many adult Scouters gave their time and expertise. Thanks to all the Signal Hill volunteers for another successful event - Yo Ho Ho, we ARRRRRR the best!
