Scouter of the Month of June 2003
Wayne D. Slover is a scouter from a scouting family. When Wayne was a Cub Scout his father was his Cubmaster and then later became his Scoutmaster. His mother was very active in both the Boy Scout program and Girl Scouts with his sister. His sister continued the tradition for many years by also being a Girl Scout leader.
Wayne has been happily married to his wife Jann for twenty-eight years. In addition to her being a Girl Scout leader, she has been very supportive to Wayne's dedication to the Boy Scout program. She has shared responsibility and adventures including campouts, camporees, canoeing Boundary Waters and whitewater rafting in Colorado. They have three children, a daughter, Amy, who just graduated from Illinois State University, and twin sons, Brad and Alex, both Eagle Scouts and seniors at ISU.
Wayne grew up in the small town of Califon in New Jersey. His scouting experiences included many adventures and campouts. As a young adult he was both an Assistant Scoutmaster and Post Associate Advisor. He attended the 1964 Valley Forge Jamboree, the 1965 New York World's Fair as a volunteer scout, the 1969 Idaho Jamboree, worked at Schiff BSA National Training Center. He was also very active in the Order of the Arrow, attaining the Vigil Honor as a scout. When he moved to Illinois he became an Assistant Scoutmaster, Committee Chairman, Scoutmaster and the Unit Commissioner with Troop 195 in Schaumburg. After a short break because of work and family commitments, he became involved again with his twin sons in Cub Scouts and then in Boy Scouts. Wayne joined Pathfinder's Cub Scout Roundtable staff and for five years staffed Cub Scout Basic, OWL, Webelos training, and chaired the Den Leader workshop. He continues to be involved as “Wayne's World” the tie slide guy at Pow Wow's presenting hundreds of neckerchief slides and slide ideas. He is a wood carver and if you have a carved OWL Training neckerchief slide, it was most likely carved by Wayne.
For five years, Wayne was the Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner. During that time he was also an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 392 and Advisor for the Explorer Post 392 (now Venturing Crew 392). In 1999, Post 392 was council's Post of the Year and his daughter, Amy, Exploring Member of the Year. Venturing Crew 392 was awarded many Super Activity Awards and in 2001 the Crew was Pathfinder's District Venturing Crew of the Year. Wayne chaired camporees, his favorite was “Survivor.” He has been a Merit Badge counselor for many years and has been on OKPIK staff for four years. Wayne has earned many Scouting awards and knots, including, Cub Scout Leader, Cubmaster, Scouter's Key, a bachelor degree from Lord Baden Powell University, Commissioner's Key, Wood Badge, District Committee Key, Pathfinder's Order of the Heart, District Award of Merit, and Pathfinder Commissioner of the Year.
Wayne believes in the scouting program, as it has given him and his family many skills, adventures and fun. He gives back to make the program continue for others to experience also. Congratulations Wayne! Thank you for all you do!!!
