Welcome new Units

North Woods is happy to welcome a new Venturing Crew and Boy Scout Troop to our district.  Venturing Crew 401 was officially chartered in December to Kingswood United Methodist Church in Buffalo Grove.  This crew will have a high adventure emphasis.  The new Troop is chartered to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Prospect Heights.  Both new units have some energetic leaders and scouts.  If you get a chance, and see anyone from these units, be sure to welcome them to the Greatest District in Northwest Suburban Council.

Dinner recap

On Scouting's Anniversary, February 8th, North Woods District had a party.  Well, prom is more like it.  The Annual Recognition dinner was held at the Avalon Banquets in Elk Grove Village.  The event featured a great meal and warm friendly conversations.  The evening culminated with the recognition of leaders from throughout North Woods. Twenty-one awards were given out to Den Leaders, Ass't Cubmasters and Scoutmasters as well as special recognitions and top sidekick awards.  The commissioner staff presented their Top Crew, Troop and Pack as well as the outstanding Scoutmaster and Cubmaster awards.  The District Committee presented the Tall Pines awards to those Scouters who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve the youth of North Woods.  The final awards given out were the District Award of Merit to four of North Woods finest.  After all the awards were handed out, it was time to kick up the heels and the District danced till almost midnight!  All in all, the evening was a great success as we recognized Scoutings volunteers.  Thanks to the Committee who organized the event; Chris Geraghty and Dee Tollaksen as Chairman with Carl Laub, Al Wilson, Caryl Medsker, Alice & Mike Ellis as committee members.

Camp-o-ree

While the date is set for April 25-27, 2003, the location has not been established.  This year's theme will be PIONEERING and the camp-o-ree will be run a little different.

In the morning, each Troop will get their campsite ready for TOP CAMPER inspection. They will also begin building their pioneering project within their campsite. Each Troop will have to supply their own materials to build the structure(s) they choose.

Each Troop will be requested to invite either a Commissioner or Camp-O-Ree staff member to their campsite to have lunch. This will give ample opportunity for each Troop to bribe someone for extra points.

At 1:00 PM, Webelos and Cub Scouts will be invited to visit each campsite to view the pioneering project(s). Each patrol at camp-o-ree will be asked to do a demonstration within the campsite for the Webelos and Cub Scouts. This should be a safe, fun, hands on type project such as making rope, tying knots or building a first aid kits.

During this time period, the pioneering judges will be evaluating the different projects built earlier in the day.

The Cub Scouts/Webelos who attend will be invited to have dinner with the different Troops that are present. The District Activities committee will assign the Cub Scouts to the Troops for dinner. Each Troop should be prepared to host some of the visiting Cub Scouts and Webelos for dinner.

Cost is estimated currently at $6.00 for the Boy Scouts Troops and $4.00 for the Cub Scouts and Webelos.  All in attendance will get a patch.

Saturday evening will conclude with a campfire show presented by the OA that will include the Ordeal candidate call outs.

More information including the flyer and registration forms will be available at the March Roundtable and on the web.
