Scouter of the Month
Our Scouter of the Month for May is our very own Signal Hill District Chairman, Frank Moriarty. Many of you know him by his smiling face and humorous disposition at campouts, Leader Training, Roundtable and District meetings. Frank is quite proud of the volunteers that work with him throughout all of Signal Hill; in fact, because of their dedication, Signal Hill made Quality District in 2002!
Frank follows in the footsteps of his Dad who was a fellow Scouter. His Dad's involvement in Scouting included Scoutmaster (at a very young age) and Commissioner. In Mt. Prospect, his Dad even helped start both a new Pack and a new Troop.
Frank started in Scouting as a cute little Cub Scout in Pack 235 and then moved into Troop 235. Although he enjoyed Scouting, he only earned a few merit badges, one being Public Speaking (imagine that!). Many of you have probably seen him at a number of the Leader Training Courses; at Outdoor Leader, he's known as "the Knot Guy". He is currently serving as Assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 309, where is son Michael is a Life Scout. He is also actively involved in the Aviation Venture Crew 111 with both his son Michael and his daughter Heather.
Frank took Woodbadge C-03-99; while others ate foil packed dinners for their wilderness meal, his patrol backpacked in live lobsters . Frank recently earned his 3rd Woodbadge bead, serving on Staff at Woodbadge C-14-02 as Editor of the Gilwell Gazette. His intrepid reporting of every day's events, with 3 editions of the Gilwell Gazette, earned him the nickname "Scoop" His brand of journalism certainly provided a unique view of the daily events at Woodbadge.
Frank has determined that his job in Scouting is help Leaders recognize that their role is to truly leave a legacy. Along with teaching their Scouts outdoor skills and Leadership, he wants to make sure that the Scouting Program is fun, for both the Scouts and all of the Leaders.
