“Cheerful Service” prepares Napowan for summer

Either knowingly or un-knowingly, over 400 Scouts, Scouters and professional staffers exemplified the Order of the Arrow motto as they plunged into "work" projects on May 15 to get Camp Napowan ready for the summer season.

Numerous projects were completed successfully, including installation of new flagpoles at all campsites, and PCV/fences at both the boating and aquatics areas. Besides the efforts by Scouters, Ordeal and Brotherhood candidates, individual Scout troops took on specific jobs.

T-32 brought materials and labor to complete the installation of large, steel fire rings and the construction/installation of a bulletin board at Badger; T-91 completed the building of stadium-type seating and a platform for the Hills' Lake waterfront; T-335 constructed and installed a new canoe rack at Lake Napowan; and T-964 repaired the Trading Post roof, to name a few.

All of the construction, painting, clearing, etc., was part of the annual camaraderie that characterizes the OA Fellowship Weekend. Our OA Lodge inducted 100 new Ordeal members and 62 Brotherhood members during solemn evening ceremonies. Ten Scouts and Scouters received the esteemed "Vigil" honor: Dan Bettison, John Campbell, Robert Cohen, Sam Jung, Bryan Kapicka, Mike Kowais, Jeff Schragin, Rae Stecker and Nickolas Tackett.

Keeping the whole crew well fed as usual was up-early, up-late Earl McDermid and his terrific kitchen crew. Besides cooking and serving up well over 1200 donuts (quality-tested frequently by Randy Toland), the crew outdid themselves with a multi-ethnic, four-course dinner.

T-32 ASM Kevin Fang, speaking of the weekend, was heard to say, "Hey this is fun! We've got to do this every year!" Atta boy, Kevin!
