NWSC Scout Earns National Award
Though most Scouts learn it, only a minute fraction will ever use CPR in a real life-and-death situation. Eagle Scout Chris Schroeder learned it, and used it to save a life.
For that, Chris this month will receive the BSA’s Medal of Merit. It is a prestigious award granted by a National Court of Honor and calls attention to “outstanding service in implementing Scouting skills and ideals”.
It was last summer when 18-year old Chris let his instincts and Boy Scout first aid training take over. (Yes, processing a national award takes time.) Sean Zeley, a 29 year old contractor who was involved in a remodeling project at the Schroeder’s Barrington home, collapsed without warning. Chris’ dad yelled to his son for help, and when Chris came running, Zeley was on the ground – his face turning purple. Chris jumped into action performing chest compressions while a neighbor – who is a nurse – handled the breathing. Zeley’s heart beat recovered and he resumed breathing just as paramedics arrived! He is alive today because of the immediate work of Chris and his neighbor.
Chris – who today is a member of Venturing Crew 461 in Hoffman Estates and a freshman at the Art Institute of Chicago – is modest about his heroics. “I was just doing what I was trained to do – nothing more, nothing less”, he says. “I learned that all the stuff they teach in Scouts – there’s a reason.” You bet Chris! Our congratulations!
Jambo ’05 Updates:
NWSC’s youth registration fills four Jambo troops! At press time, 179 Scouts had registered for the 2005 Jamboree, 35 over the needed 144. However, registrations are continuing: to fill a requested 5th troop and to fill any last-minute vacancies. A big “THANK YOU” to all troop leaders for helping our Jambo presenters make recruiting an early success!
1st Call for “Hometown Reporters!” The Jambo’s Hometown News Operation is a great opportunity for NWSC’s Scouts to gain media experience. Scouts who have earned the Journalism Merit Badge will work as ‘hometown reporters’ with adult media pros. to provide home newspapers, radio and TV stations with personalized Jambo coverage. The Daily Herald has agreed to cooperate. Interested Scouts should call Carl Laub (1-847-394-5115) or Marcia Dunne (1-847-550-6909) for additional details
Friends of Scouting on the Home Stretch
As of April 15th the 2004 Friends of Scouting Campaign is at 70% of goal and 2% ahead of this time last year. Our family campaign is well on target thanks to the hard work of our Family FOS presentation teams led by Cindy Kunzer, and the generous support of Scouting families throughout the Northwest Suburban Council!
Our net goal this year is $380,000, which is about 17% of the council’s operating budget. Friends of Scouting dollars support such things as training, insurance, camp upkeep and maintenance, professional and support staff, and the marketing and promotion of Scouting in the northwest suburbs. Thanks for your help!
Spring is here and a perfect time to Recruit
This spring, ALL Troops are asked to hold Troop Open Houses in April or May. NWSC will help you by distributing fliers on Boy Scouting and scheduling boy talks for the 5th graders. Troops should also encourage Scouts to be recruiters themselves. Boy-to-boy recruitment is still one of the best methods. Information on how to run an open house or recruit can be obtained through your District Executive or Membership Chairman.
The spring recruitment emphasis for Cub Scouts is Tiger Cubs. Each unit should be going into the Kindergartens, sending flyers, holding boy talks and recruiting those boys.
The key to a successful recruitment is to have program for those boys to jump into. The council is asking each district to hold a Tiger Event in May. Each unit should also have a summer program for the new Tigers to attend. Part of that program can be Day Camp – and yes, new Tigers can attend Day Camp. You want to also remember, every grade should be targeted for new Cub Scouts.
Every Venturing Crew is asked to hold an Open House this spring. Look at your rosters and identify all those youth who are high school seniors or older. That number plus 1 is the number of new members you should add to your rosters this spring. And remember, Venturing is a CO-ED program!
A Big NWSC Welcome To Three New Units
We welcome three new units to the NWSC family!Troop 112 — chartered to Knights of Columbus Regina Council in Wheeling. Troop 290 — chartered to the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce. And Crew 360 —chartered to Mikes Bikes Shop in Palatine! If you know of an area or organization that would be interested in chartering a Pack, Troop, or Crew, please contact your Membership team or District Executive.
Scout Shorts
A Scout is “thrifty”, and so too is a Council that always aims to offer the best program possible. In 2003, 85% of all the money raised in the Northwest Suburban Council was spent on program. That’s the finding of an annual audit of the Council performed by Robert Hofmeier, a CPA from Gurnee, Illinois.
Greg Entwhistle, an Eagle Scout from Troop 69 has won one of the BSA’s $3,000 Eagle Scholarships! Congratulations Greg!

Camperships Available for Scouts in Need
Summer camping programs are one of the cornerstone methods of Scouting. Whether it’s Cub Day Camp, Resident Camp, Webelos Camp, or Boy Scout Camp, it is in these outdoor “laboratories” that all the lessons, skills, and values that Scouting teaches are brought out. No Scout should be denied these life-changing experiences because of money.
The Orndorff Campership Fund was created in the late 1980’s with a bequest from the Orndorff family and has been growing through additional donations and interest income ever since. Over the years the Orndorff Campership Fund as provided hundreds of Scouts the opportunity to attend Camp Napawon and Camp Lakota, the National Jamboree, and Philmont, Northern Tier, and the Florida Sea Base.
Applications are available by calling the camp hotline at 847-635-9404. All applications must be filled out and submitted by a Scout’s unit leader. Applications and camperships are handled very discreetly with no publicity, so applicants and their families can rest assured that their request for assistance is held in the strictest of confidence. Don’t let money be a hurdle for any Scout who wants to benefit from the top-of-the-line outdoor activities of the Boy Scouts of America.
Get Ready for Golf!
Put your game-face on, and get set to “swing away”! The Northwest Suburban Council is getting set to hold its annual Golf Outing Monday June 7th at the Inverness Golf Club.
This is a major fund-raiser for our council, and we’re looking to you for support. The fees are $400 per player. Hole sponsorships are $300. Cart sponsorships are $50. For $1800 there is a “package deal” including a foursome, hole sponsorship and cart sponsorship.
Normally we have 20 foursomes in this outing, but we can have as many as 32 foursomes playing. The more who play, the more Scouting benefits. Join us for a great day of golf in the sunshine – and a great day for Scouting! Please contact Council Finance Director Jason Erpelding at 847-824-6880.
