ScoutFest ‘05 Truly a Smorgasbord

Some three hundred people gathered at Notre Dame High School for the 2005 Scoutfest which offered a smorgasbord of Scouting skills and culinary delights.

Over 60 different classes were offered from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting to Venturing and more. The program ran from 9am till 4:30pm on Saturday Nov. 12th. A highlight at the lunch break was the midway display that offered information on Religious programs, Lord Baden Powel University, Wood Badge, and all other types of training. One very interesting course for all was the outdoor cooking skills that showed a wide variety of items to cook outdoors including; roasting a turkey in a garbage can roaster, Krispy Kreme bread pudding, eggs in a orange shell and baked mostacioli. Good Scouting always includes a taste of creative cooking.

Blue and Gold Banquet

The Blue and Gold Banquet is a birthday party for Cub Scouting and usually celebrated by Cub Scout Packs in February, the anniversary month of the Boy Scouts of America. The Blue and Gold is probably the most exciting event of the whole year because families can take part.

A couple of quick reminders to ensure a great Blue and Gold Banquet:

  • Invite your honored guests early to ensure the event is on their calendars
  • Purchase supplies and awards early to minimize last minute shopping
  • Your Blue and Gold Committee should be well along in their event planning
  • Draft your Banquet Program that includes the event schedule, name of Pack leaders, committee people, special guests, songs, skits, and a short history of the pack
  • Book your entertainment now!

Remember this simple “rule” – KISMIF – Keep it Simple. Make it Fun!

Silver Beaver nominations due Dec. 31

Take a mental look around your Scouter circle and see who's doing something outstanding in serving our youth. Then, go either to the council website, www.nwsc.org, or to the Service Center and obtain the Silver Beaver nomination form, fill it out and submit it for the person/s you consider worthy for the Council's highest award.

The Silver Beaver is a national award presented at the Council level annually to a limited number of registered Scouters, based on his/her record of overall service, their community standing and a noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth within the Council.

On Friday, May 5, the awards will be presented at the Council's Annual Recognition Dinner.

We have many dedicated NWSC Scouters who devote time and effort over and above their registered position requirements. Make it tough on the Silver Beaver Award Committee. Submit more than one candidate. Completed nominations must be at the Service Center no later than Dec. 31.

    A Scout Uniform?

Scouts, what would you think of a policeman in full uniform except for trousers, which were a bright plaid material? How about a hospital intern wearing a sport coat over his white uniform while on duty? Or what would you think of a train conductor wearing a fireman’s cap or even more absurd an airline pilot wearing the silks of a jockey as he boarded the plane?

They would all be “out of uniform,” wouldn’t they? With some of the outfits mentioned, you would not be sure of what they really were.

Scouts have a uniform, too. We have a full uniform – not just a neckerchief or a shirt, but like the people just mentioned, we have a full uniform. When we don’t wear the full uniform, we are just as “out of uniform” as the policeman with the plaid pants.

The Flag Code says that when we are “in uniform” we salute the flag with the Scout salute, but when “out of uniform” we salute by holding our right hand over our heart.
How do you think a Scout should salute the flag if he is wearing blue jeans or chinos or some other non-official dress along with part of the uniform?
He is not “in uniform” is he?
