Mike will also become a combination DE/Ranger with that council while he finishes his college education. Annual Recognition Dinner

Even the Blues bring out the best! Nearly 200 Scouters and professional staff members gathered Friday evening May 6th to salute some premier accomplishments for 2004, and then enjoy some post-accolade blues – courtesy of Jake and Elwood – “The Blues Brothers”.

The highlight of the evening was the awarding of the prestigious Silver Beaver – the highest award a Council can confer upon an adult volunteer. This year’s recipients are Linda Cohn, Bob Galassi, Barbara Rubenstein, Ed Schipp, Wayne Slover, Chuck Taubman, and the late Dorothy O’Neill. Dorothy passed away shortly after this year’s Silver Beavers were selected. Her sons Dan, Mike, and daughter Kathy accepted the award in their mother’s honor.

Five NWSC districts – North Woods, Pathfinder, Signal Hill, Aguila, and Learning for Life/Exploring also received National Quality District designations for 2004. Congratulations also to Marilee Minott and Kevin Keyes for receiving the adult Venturing Leadership and Youth Venturing leadership awards respectively.

Cool Outings – Native Ways

Even with some blustery, cold and damp weather, the April 22-24, 2005 Lakota Dancers Indian Events Workshop was a success!  Over 150 Boy Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts and others enjoyed learning from Native American culture & craft experts.  They had their choice of 20 different sessions during the day on Saturday and participated in a learning Pow Wow on Saturday night.  The winner of the traditional men's dance competition was NWSC's own Kevin Keyes.  Another bonus from the event is the crew has 4 new members and will be active over the summer - call Debbie at 847-991-3205 or Linda at 847-882-1644 for information on membership (boys or girls ages 11 & up).

Next year's event is already booked with the camp, so all you early planners, mark your calendars for April 21-23, 2006.  Go to our website... http://crew476.nwsc.org for pictures & a registration form.  See you there next year!

  • Scout Executive's Minute
  • Scouter of the Month

  • Attention all Units: Do you know who your James E West Fellows are? ENDOWMENT HELPS NAPOWAN – TROOPS TO BENEFIT

When the need for repairs to Napowan’s older shower house and Dining Hall walk-in cooler unexpectedly surfaced this spring, a lack of funding jeopardized the Council’s ability to prepare the camp for summer sessions. However, Scouts and Scouters at Napowan this summer will now benefit because the NWSC Endowment Fund has contributed the funds necessary to complete the repairs prior to the arrival of the first Scouts in June.

As this small example demonstrates, with traditional sources of funding continuing to diminish, a large Endowment Fund, whose earnings could help supplement the needs of our Council, is key to the long term survival of Scouting in our community.

To celebrate the Endowment Fund’s role in helping Napowan this summer and to encourage more participation in growing the Endowment Fund, camp staff have agreed to provide special recognition for each Troop whose Scouters have helped the Endowment Fund. For each active Troop Scouter who is a 2005 James E West Fellow ($1,000 contribution or pledge), the Troop will enjoy one meal in the comforts of the dinning hall and served by camp staff.

Camp Director Randy Toland said, “ Without the help of the Endowment Fund, I’m not sure what we would have done. If we can help spread the word and help the Endowment Fund grow, then we all win in the long run.”

For more information on the NWSC Endowment Fund contact Jason Erpelding, Finance Director or any District Executive.

    Scouting for Food

The annual Scouting for Food effort succeeded once again in collecting a sizable quantity of food for those in need. Over 85 units in the Northwest Suburban Council took part in this year’s campaign. They collected over seven-thousand pounds of food for local pantries. Thank you to everyone for your fine work.

    Philmont

There are still some openings in the Council Contingent for Philmont 2005. Please check with Marty Schultz at the council office. Sign ups are also being taken for 2006.

    101 Eagles

Boy Scout Troop 140, sponsored by St. Mary Parish in Buffalo Grove reached a major milestone in its thirty-two year history. At an Eagle Court of Honor, held on May 1st for eight scouts, the troop presented their 101st Eagle Scout Award. Arlington Heights Mayor, Arlene Mulder was a keynote speaker. She thanked the boys for the service projects they performed for the community and asked them to remember all the people, who helped them reach scouting's highest award and to continue to contribute to the community as well.

When asked how this 101-member troop inspires so many boys to become Eagle Scouts. The answer is twofold. First each Life Scout is assigned an adult mentor to counsel him and keep him on track. Second, the troop has an active and challenging high adventure program that retains a scout long enough for them to complete the trail to Eagle. Camping up high where the Eagles soar can be quite an inspiration.

    Schaumburg Flyers Scout Nights

Come celebrate Scout Nights with the Schaumburg Flyers on Wednesday, June 22nd and Tuesday, July 12th. Both games begin at 7:05 PM at Alexian Field. Pre-Game activities include an autograph session and parade around the warning track at 6:15. Submit all scout's names, ages and phone numbers with your registration for the random drawing. Scouts will be selected to participate in special game-time activities! Cost is $8.00 per person, plus $1.00 for the new 2005 Scout Night Patch.

Go to www.nwsc.org/2005Flyers.pdf to obtain a copy of the registration form and flyer. The July 12th game will recognize the 75th Anniversary of Cub Scouting! Remember to bring your American, Pack, Troop and Crew Flags (and be in uniform) to participate in the parade. For more information please contact Pat Davis (895-5742) or Brian Sutilla (824-6893). Deadline for the June 22nd game is June 9th, so don't delay!
