Scouter of the Month - Gary Powell
When Gary Powell talks about his Scouting roots in Cub Scout Pack 96 and Boy Scout Troop 96, he’s not just referring to his time as an adult leader. Growing up in the Northwest Suburban Council, Gary joined Pack 96 as a Cub Scout in 1962, earned his Arrow of Light in 1966, and spent four years in Troop 96 before leaving Scouting when the Troop became inactive. So, having returned to live in Rolling Meadows where he grew up, it was only natural when his son Phil wanted to get involved in Scouting in 1993, that he registered him in Pack 96. It only took a couple of years, and Gary found himself getting involved in Scouting again as Webelos Den Leader and as Assistant Cubmaster. A year before his son earned his Arrow of Light in the Pack, Troop 96 re-chartered and became active again, so a year later he and his son crossed over into the Troop. Since February of 1998, Gary has served the Troop as an Assistant Scoutmaster for three years, and now as Scoutmaster for four years. He will readily tell you what a privilege and honor it is to be the Scoutmaster of the Troop that he once belonged to as a boy. Scouting is Gary’s passion. He’s taken all the training courses offered to adult leaders – including Wood Badge and a week at the Philmont training center. His proudest moment in Scouting was seeing his son achieve the rank of Eagle Scout last year. Thanks Gary for all you do! |
