Ready, Set, Napowan!

2200 Scouts have their sights set on Napowan for summer camp. They’ll be coming from 110 units – most within the Northwest Suburban Council, but many will be joining us from other councils.

Some changes are planned for food service this year. Though family-style serving will continue, a defined vegetarian menu is being added. Outpost cooking will also have a defined menu.

The Camper Activity Program is being re-worked a bit for this summer. C.A.P. has been an effective way for first-time campers to enjoy the program, and understand the challenges of camp while working on advancement. To improve upon those goals, C.A.P. this summer will be geared more toward groups of young campers as opposed to individuals. The hope is that working together will increase involvement and fun.

Merit Badge work each week this summer will begin with Monday seminars conducted by counselors. The sessions are meant to clearly explain requirements and expectations while helping the boys focus on what they need to do and how much time it’ll realistically take to achieve a merit badge of choice. The seminars will enable the counselors to collect as many merit badge cards as possible early in the week. Scouts should sign up early and manage their time wisely.

Finally, for older Scouts who hunger for more adventure, we’re once again offering four high adventures through our Blue Goose High Adventure Base.
  • Canoeing the Flambeau Flowage in northern Wisconsin
  • Backpacking the Porcupine Mountains of Michigan’s upper peninsula
  • The Blue Goose Challenge – including C.O.P.E., Kayacking and cycling in Sparta, Wisconsin, and climbing at Devil’s Lake
  • Scuba diving at Devil’s Lake

For more Blue Goose and Summer Camp information, call Randy Toland or Marty Schultz at 847-824-6880.

A Time for Honors and a Time for Fun

On Friday evening, May 6, you are invited to help honor our 2004 Silver Beaver recipients, celebrate our district accomplishments, salute our distinguished Scout units and to have a lot of fun at the Council Annual Recognition Dinner.

The event is being held at Chateau Rand, 900 E. Rand Rd. in Des Plaines (just north of Golf Rd.). With live "blues" music playing in the background, it will start with a 6:30, cash bar, social gathering. A family style dinner, the awards presentation and a fun-filled program will follow.

Being honored for their long-time service and dedication to Scouting and community services are Silver Beaver Recipients Barbara Rubenstein, Bob Galassi, Ed Schipp, Chuck Taubman, Wayne Slover, Linda Cohn and Dorothy O’Neill. As reported in the April NW News, Dorothy died before her selection was revealed.

The Silver Beaver is the highest national award that may be presented at the Council level.

And here’s an Annual Dinner First: 5 districts will receive Quality District Awards and 27 Scout units and 2 Venturing Crews will receive Distinguished Unit Awards.

Attendees will be treated also to an appearance of good ole Jake and Elwood following the awards ceremony. That’s right, a Blues Brother Act. And, come and see the original Mt. Prospect Police Department "Bluesmobile" that barely survived the film production.

The cost for the non-uniform event is $30.00 per person. Make reservations NOW. Dark sun-glasses are allowed.

Philmont 2005 – Openings Still Available

We very much want to fill our entire 60-person roster for this summer’s Council Philmont contingent, but at this writing we’re a dozen people short. So, THERE’S STILL TIME TO SIGN UP FOR A TRIP OF A LIFETIME. Ask anyone who’s been to Philmont, and they’ll tell you what a memorable and remarkable impact it has on their lives. Yes, it is challenging. Yes, you need to prepare. But the rewards are immeasurable. Many boys (and girls) come back from this experience more mature, more self-confident, better team-players, wiser and stronger for the experience.

The dates for this year’s trek are July 9th through the 22nd. Please contact Randy Toland at the Council office for more information (847-824-6880). Openings remain, but time is running out. PLEASE SIGN UP TODAY.

Plan NOW for fall Wilderness 1st Aid Course

A quick scenario: Your unit is on a High Adventure back-packing trek when a Scout falls and suffers a broken leg and major bleeding. The nearest help is miles away. What do you do?

You can find out on Sept. 16 - 18 at Camp Lakota. By registering for the American Red Cross Wilderness 1st Aid Basic Course, you will have 16 hours of classroom, skills practice and role playing to learn how to respond and treat remote area illnesses and injuries.

Working with certified ARC instructors, you'll develop team skills also as you assess and take action to deal with outdoor, realistic (censored because of graphic description) injury situations.

The cost is $90.00 for the weekend which includes all meals and course materials. Registration deadline is Sept. 9. Fill out and return a reservation form to the Council Volunteer Service Center and mark your calendar.

Until then, your Scout is still bleeding severely and is suffering with his broken leg. What are you going to do about it?

Spring is Time for New Growth

Now’s the time to plant those seeds and get a quick harvest of new Tigers, Cubs and Boy Scouts. Don’t have the seeds? Well, how about contacting your Unit Commissioner,District Membership Chairman or District Executive to schedule a unit recruiting date or a "Boy Talk" at your school?

Using the theme, "Grow Up Together," Cub Leaders can reach out to kindergarten boys and invite them to a fun day such as an outdoor Olympics.

For Boy Scout Leaders, the theme, "Bring a Friend," is ideal to have your Scouts invite a non-scout buddy to an open house or a troop campout. Treat them to a Dutch Oven cobbler!

The idea is to reveal some exciting, fun things that boys of all ages can do in scouting. But, be creative and do it now for spring recruiting.

Then, on May 19, plan on attending the Council’s Fall Recruitment Kick-Off at the Volunteer Service Center.

Starting at 7:30 p.m., the training will provide both Cub and Boy Scout Leaders with the know-how and materials that will be used to stage recruiting nights, open houses and outdoor events. It’s spring! Let’s plant those Tiger seeds now and watch them grow and transform into soaring Eagles.
