Nine Scouters Awarded Silver Beavers
Any long-time Scouter will tell you that the greatest reward in being a volunteer leader is to make a difference for todays youth through Scouting. Still, its important to recognize those adults whove given extraordinary time and talent to Scouting while contributing the same enthusiasm to their individual churches and communities. The award is the Silver Beaver the highest award a Scout council can bestow on an adult volunteer, and this year the Northwest Suburban Council is proud to announce the selection of nine long-time Scouters as winners of this honor.
They are:
Jim Polites, former Signal Hill District Commissioner. Jim has long been involved in the councils campmaster program and has helped train many adults whove followed in Scouting.
Larry Grover is an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 228. He has also served as a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Eagle coordinator and merit badge counselor.
Al Knox is the NWSCs current Treasurer. Hes served as a Scoutmaster, is a Rotarian and is very active in his church.
Reggie Lithgow is the Pathfinder District Commissioner, a member of the Jamboree staff, and a tireless volunteer.
Arlene Mulder is the mayor of Arlington Heights, a member of the NWSCs Executive Board, and a strong supporter of Scouting.
Bill McGovern is a past Pathfinder District Commissioner, a member of the council executive board and has been extremely active in Scout training.
Steve Towne is a high adventure enthusiast whos regularly helped coordinate training for the councils Philmont contingents. Hes done Philmont treks four times, and will do more when his sons are old enough. Steve also leads Family Camping weekend.
Hugh Bartholomees has been the Scoutmaster of Troop 167 for over 35-years. He is a merit badge counselor, Unit Commissioner and a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.
Leonard Wade has been a Cubmaster, merit badge counselor, has served as the councils chairman of Scout for Food, and North Woods District FOS chairman.
All nine of these great Scouters have also invested themselves in serving youth outside of Scouting. They are all very involved in their churches and communities which is a fundamental requirement of becoming a Silver Beaver. We thank and salute all nine of these Scouters for their wonderful contributions to our youth. They will all be honored at the Councils annual recognition dinner May 5th. Please join us then in congratulating the 2005 Silver Beavers.
Scouting for Food
Its time to prepare once again for our annual Good Turn project Scouting for Food. Door hangers will go up on May 6th throughout the northwest suburbs and the following Saturday May 13th Scouts will be out beginning at 9AM to pick up donations of food for the needy.
This is the 18th year Scouts in our council have taken part in the Scouting for Food effort, and as in past years, we will once again team up this year with the United Postal carriers in this massive food collection.
Last year over four-thousand Scouts collected more than 100-thousand food items which were then donated to local food pantries. For more information call the council office at 847-824-6880.

Christmas came a little late...
but the gifts were terrific. At the Council's Annual Business Meeting on Jan . 18, Order of the Arrow Lodge Chief Don Hough surprised Executive Board and Professional Staff Members with the honor society's first gift...a check for $10,000. The check completed the OA's five-year pledge to donate a total of $25,000 for the construction of an OA building at Camp Napowan. But, Hough wasn't finished. He followed up with a second gift...a pledge from his OA members that another $25,000 would be donated over the next 5 years to help the Council's current $4.3 million capital campaign. The financial gifts and the OA's on-going work to improve facilities at Camp Napowan and Camp Lakota drew a standing ovation from the 100+ assembly of adult Scouters, corporate and civic leaders. Launched last fall, the capital campaign include goals for the building a new dining hall at Camp Napowan, a conference center/dining hall at Camp Lakota and newer facilities for the Council Volunteer Service Center. The OA's welcomed gifts and its work performed at semi-annual Fellowship Weekends are visible proof that its motto, "Cheerful Service," are more than just words. Northwest Suburban Council wishes to thank all of the 1000 OA members and their adult advisors for their Scouting accomplishments.
