SCOUT EXECUTIVE'S MINUTE
Dear Fellow Scouters:
Many companies have a “matching gifts” program that supports non-profit organizations chosen by their employees. The employees make a gift to the non-profit organization by check, provide evidence to their employer that they have made such a gift, and the employer then provides a check to the non-profit organization of an equal or greater value. The list changes frequently of the companies that have matching gift programs as well as their requirements or restrictions. Who administers the matching gift programs at a particular company or subsidiary also changes frequently. But here’s the beauty of the program. Your gift benefits the non-profit organization and your company matches your gift dollar for dollar – and then some. Contact your human resources department today to see if your gift (such as FOS) qualifies and can benefit Scouting in the Northwest Suburban Council. One frequently asked question: Can I designate such a gift to a specific troop? Unfortunately, the answer is usually no as a local Troop is generally non incorporated, does not have an annual independent audit, conform to IRS rules, does not file an IRS Form 990 or is a registered Illinois charity. Generally speaking, only the local national councils of the Boy Scouts of America meet the necessary reporting requirements to meet the criteria set by companies and foundations. However, the more matching gifts that can be secured keeps activities and camp fees lower for local Packs and Troops than they would be without such gifts. The partial list below matches a parent company, its match ratio, and minimum employee annual gift, and the maximum employer annual gift. Literally, any and all amounts are deeply appreciated as well as needed. Here’s a unique way to really support NWSC Scouting!
