NWSC Popcorn Pies!

Do you know what a “Popcorn Pie” is?

Scout units that sell over $50,000 in popcorn this year will learn that a “Popcorn Pie” is a sweet treat for their top sellers. Council President, Rich Politowicz; Council Commissioner, Ray Okigawa and Scout Executive Stephen Taylor have agreed to be “pied” by the top popcorn seller from every Scout unit that sells more than $50,000 in popcorn during the fall popcorn campaign.

The 2006 Popcorn Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, August 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Service Center. Your unit Popcorn Kernel should attend to get the latest information on the Popcorn program and to reserve a time when your Unit will be able to “Pie” our Council Key Three.

Kick your fall Scouting program off with the best fund raiser available to Scouts. Popcorn allows many units to buy new equipment, send Scouts to camp and fund all of their activities during the year.

Come join the other Kernels on August 30.

Wilderness First Aid Basics Course – Be Prepared

A major part of Scouting is camping, often in remote areas. What do you do, Scouts and Scouters, when your unit finds itself in dire need of first aid and none is available immediately? This is the main thrust of NWSC’s American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Basics Course, to be conducted by Director Kevin Chapman at Camp Lakota on September 30 to October 1. The course is for those who work, live, or play in remote areas – away from the usual EMS service. Even though the emergency workers may be trained to search for and rescue those in need, there may be a delay in the notification of assistance, the time required to get to the victim, or moving the victim to more advanced treatment.

This sixteen hour course uses a combination of classroom, skills practice and role play learning to teach the response steps and treatment of injuries and illnesses in a delayed-help situation. The class covers assessment and first aid techniques for when EMS is not readily available. Instructions will take place both indoor and outdoor using realistic scenarios. The class has no prerequisites however; current first aid and CPR certifications would be helpful. Participants generally camp in tents.

Registration is limited to the first 36 paid participants. The course is open to High Adventure participants, Adult Scouters, Venture Scouts. Minimum age requirement is 15 years of age. Please submit your registration to the NWSC office as soon as possible.

Previous courses have been very successful. For more information feel free to contact J. Kevin Chapman for details at 1-847-392-8707 or madpiper@bh.nwsc.org

Building a Legacy Tops $1 Million

The Northwest Suburban Council Capital Development Campaign recently surpassed the $1 million level of total pledges. This total is a result of cash donations, bona-fide pledges, and independently evaluated gifts-in-kind specifically designated by the donor for the Capital Campaign.

This amount is triple the amount every raised previously by the Council for capital projects.

There are now 200 donors specifically contributing to the “Building a Legacy” Capital Development Campaign. Most pledges are committed to be converted to cash over the next three years with a couple of the large gifts over the next five years.

The Scouts and Scouters of the Council extend many thanks to the contributors who have contributed to this early success of the Campaign. Also a special thank you to Dave Pepper and Jim Tierney for providing outstanding leadership to this important campaign. They have made significant personal gifts as well as helped secure major corporate gifts for the Campaign.
