NWSC Hosts National Art Tour

The Northwest Suburban Council has been chosen to host the BSA National Endowment Foundation’s 2006 Art Tour. A early evening gala reception on Thursday, May 11 2006 – presided over by BSA Chief Executive Roy Williams – will feature 20 priceless paintings. Pieces selected for the tour include original Norman Rockwell and Joseph Csatari paintings. Norman Rockwell has often been called “America’s favorite artist” and is well know for his decades of cover illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post. He received the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for his “vivid and affectionate portraits of our country”.

This is the first time in the history of our Council that we have been selected to serve as host of this prestigious national event. The reception, which is by invitation only, is intended for current and future Endowment Fund supporters from the NWSC as well as thirteen area Councils in Illinois and Wisconsin. Chief Executive Williams will personally present and recognize recent 1910 and Founder Circle level contributors.

One of the other benefits of the event will be an Estate Preservation seminar immediately preceding the gala. Designed for informational purposes only, it will benefit all those who are considering issues such as; how or why to plan your estate, how to be sure your estate distribution intentions are followed, and how to ensure gifting and bequest intentions are achieved.

Invitations should be received by early March. If you are interested in learning more about the event or how to support our Endowment Fund, please contact Ron Schagrin, VP Endowment (volunteer) 847-969-2531 or Darwin Walk, Finance Director (professional) 847-824-6910.

Cool Outings : Okpik Cold Weather Camping

No bugs, no other campers, no heat... It's camping Okpik style! Yes there is camping in the fourth season, and we can show you how to do it right!

The Okpik cold weather camping training course is a Train the Trainer course that has been around for over a decade now in our Council. Back in 1991, three scouters went to the Northern Tier High Adventure Base in Eli, MN. to take their Okpik course. Bill McAlister, Steve Bytnar and Jim Robb spent a number of years developing the course and made it the success it is today.

As a participant of the course you learn how to dress for cold, how to sleep in a tent when the temperature is 32 degrees or colder, and many other various subjects such as cooking, fire building and the different activities you can have out in the snow.

We have four Sunday sessions that are fours hours long to prepare for the “final” for the course. These sessions are held between mid October through beginning of December. The final is the overnight which is at Camp Lakota in Woodstock on the second weekend in January.

The next Okpik course director is Roberta Hamann and her Senior Patrol Leader will be Tom Farrell.

Join us for next years course and learn the latin phrase "Non Semper Erit Aestas" which means "It Ain't Always Gonna Be Summer"

    Great Starts in Orienteering

Doubts about your sense of direction? Why not chart a course for Camp Lakota and the NWSC’s Great Starts Orienteering weekend? This is a one day event – or weekend if you choose – meant to help you with orienteering and map reading skills. We welcome beginners who are looking to master basic compass skills and the more advanced who are interested in refining their GPS talents.

This orienteering event is set for Saturday March 25th at Camp Lakota. Why not find yourself there? For more information, call Reggie Lithgow at 847-352-1948 or email at rrrlithgow@aol.com.

Lord Baden – Powell Wants You!

Touch the future – share your knowledge. It’s a thought that is part of the fabric of Scouting, and it happens to be the theme for the 17th annual Lord Baden-Powell University of Scouting. LBPU 2006 is set for March 17-19 at the George Williams campus of Aurora University in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.

As always, there is a wide variety of course offerings this year – all designed to better equip Scouters to tackle today’s challenging issues such as diversity, membership, finance and marketing. Learn techniques on how to rebuild a small unit, conduct a fun and meaningful campfire program, avoid volunteer burn-out, and provide the magic that moves a Life Scout on to Eagle. Those courses are just a taste of this year’s curriculum – from “Ethics in Scouting” to “Safe Nutritional Campout Meals” – there’s plenty to make you a better trained, more confidant Scout leader. For more information on how this college can improve your knowledge, call the Council office at 847-824-6880 or check out NWSC.org, and click on Training.

    Friends of Scouting Campaign Underway

The Northwest Suburban Council is launching its Friends of Scouting campaign with an aim toward raising $500,000 – the largest FOS goal in council history.

Monies raised through Friends of Scouting are the financial bread and butter of council operations. They help provide better training opportunities for our leaders, a more customer friendly council Service Center, adult leader screening, and aid for those Scouts who are in need of financial assistance.

The NWSC has long had a vibrant family FOS campaign. This year the focus will be on winning support from our many host communities. The community campaign will kick-off with a Leadership Breakfast Friday February 10th at the Stonegate Banquet Centre 2401 West Higgins Road in Hoffman Estates. Our guest speaker is the President of Stonegate Properties – Doug Altenberger, a former University of Illinois basketball standout, and a former Chicago Bull. We hope to see you there.
