May I Have the Envelope Please?
Well, not really. Although Academy Award type surprises are not scheduled, Northwest Suburban Council Scouters and Scouting friends will be honoring and congratulating some very special Scouters on Friday, May 5, at the council's Annual Recognition Dinner.
As announced in last month's NW News, a record 9 recipients were selected to receive the Silver Beaver, the highest National award that may be made at a local council level. The unique honor is based on a Scouter's service to youth, both inside and outside of Scouting, church and community involvement, Scouting positions held, tenure and previous honors received inside and outside of Scouting.
To be honored at the special annual event are: Hugh Bartholomees, Larry Grover, Al Knox, Reggie Lithgow, Bill McGovern, Mayor Arlene Mulder, Jim Polites, Steve Towne and Lenny Wade. Each recipient experienced a "surprise" announcement at a peer group gathering in March.
In addition, several heroism awards will be presented (both youth and adult) along with a very rare Hornaday Award for Conservation.
Our salute to these deserving Scouters will be held at Chateau Rand, 900 E. Rand Rd., Des Plaines. A social gathering with a cash bar will start at 6:30 P.M., followed by a family style dinner and program at 7 P.M. The cost is $30 per person for this non-uniform event. You are invited to join us by making reservations at the Service Center office.

Cool Outings: Keep Your Eye on the Target
32 cases of clays! Over 3,000 rounds of shotgun ammo! 6,000 rounds of .22 ammo!
The boys and dads of Troop 32 in Arlington Heights were busy with their eyes on the targets during a recent Cool Outing to the McMiller Sports Center in Eagle, Wisconsin.
The troop worked well in advance of this event sponsored by the Northwest Towns Sportsmens Club the oldest, most active organization for hunters, fisherman, and shooters in the northwest suburban area. As part of its charter, the NWTSC attempts to pass along its enthusiasm for the shooting sports. To be eligible to go on the trip, all the boys had to undergo firearm and range safety training from a qualified assistant Scoutmaster, and then underwent addition safety instruction at the range. Each boy was carefully supervised by an experienced volunteer from the NWTSC. When the trip day rolled around, 33 boys and 18 dads made the journey along with 11 NWTSC volunteers.
We think in all those numbers there are some rifle and shotgun merit badges in the making not to mention a powerful good time.
FOS Campaign Pushing Forward
The Northwest Suburban Councils Friends of Scouting campaign is moving full speed ahead toward its half-million dollar goal. Pledges through the end of March totaled roughly $240-thousand. Thats a bit shy of where wed hoped to be at this point, but units are still conducting their Family FOS presentations, and council leaders are pleased with the progress so far.
The big thrust this year is on upgrading the councils community level giving from businesses and major contributors. In addition, the council board is moving to raise $100-thousand as an independent group. If those components fall into place as hoped, the NWSC FOS campaign will close in on its unprecedented goal by the end of June.
Getting Set for Philmont
Over 70 Scouts and Scouters got a taste of Philmont last month at Lakota. It was all part of a training exercise for the councils Philmont-bound contingent of five crews and two other troops that are headed to the BSAs backpacking adventure base in New Mexico this summer.
The council has a strong tradition of preparing its crews for the rigors of Philmont, and at the Lakota weekend, everyone learned about water purification, food preparation, navigation, proper packing, and how to successfully hang a bear bag. It doesnt always happen on the first time. Thanks to all the NWSCs veteran Philmonters who taughter the courses in this outdoor classroom.
There are still several openings for this summers council contingent trip to Philmont, and sign-ups are being taken for the 2007 trip. Call Randy Toland at council for more information.

NWSC PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
Images of Cub Scouts experiencing the best of Scouting were submitted by NWSC Photo Contest winner Judy Chapman a Den Leader from Pack 287 at the Barbara B. Rose School in South Barrington.
In a note that accompanied her photo submission, Judy indicated that her camera work was a tribute to the numerous volunteer hours that Scout parents donate to the Scouting movement on a daily basis. She told the Marketing Committee that the photos of her sons den were compiled into a CD that she hope the Scouts will one day look upon with fond memories experiences to be shared with their children and an invitation to a new generation of chifondly in the future sharing an experience while encouraging a new generation of Scouts.
On behalf of the Council Marketing Committee we would like to congratulate Judy on her submission. She will receive a gift certificate to the Scout Shop that was donated by Byte Me! Computer and Internet Services.
