"It Ain't Always Gonna Be Summer"
So, sign up for Okpik the annual Cold Weather Camping Course that trains the trainer (that's all Troop Leaders, Senior Scouts and Trainers) how to go camping in the winter and have FUN.
"Since 1991, NWSC Scouters have been attending this 5-session course and taking the knowledge back to their troops so they can enjoy camping all year-round," said Roberta Hamann, long-time staffer and current Okpik Scoutmaster.
"It is not a survival course," Hamann continued, "but it does cover first aid and emergency procedures in addition to clothing; menu planning and cooking; shelter building, winter games; fire building and methods of travel in snow. The skills learned in this fun course makes cold weather camping a safe and enjoyable experience."
Four indoor Sunday afternoon sessions are to be held at the Christian Life Church, 400 E. Gregory, Mt. Prospect on: Oct. 22; Nov. 5; Nov. 19 and Dec. 10.
The 5th session is an actual campout at Camp Lakota on Jan. 13 14 when students and staff will set up campsites and put their new skills to practical use.
Cost and registration details are available on-line at www.nwsc.org/okpik and at the Service Center. Registration is limited to the first 60 paid students, ages 14 and up.
Don't wait to have fun in the winter --- go camping the Okpik way ----safely!

Len Milewski - Advisor to over 100 Eagles
Leonard A. Milewski a Scouter with over 68 years of Scouting experience passed away on August 4 after a short battle with lung cancer. Len served as an Eagle advisor to over 100 Eagle Scouts in the Signal Hill District. His love of Scouting started at the age of eight when he entered the Scouting program.
Len was awarded the Silver Beaver, by the Council for distinguished service to young people within the Council. He recently became a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. These accomplishments are just a portion of the awards and honors Len received during his career in Scouting. Ear and nose complications were the only thing that prevented Len from completing the swimming requirements to become an Eagle Scout as a youth. As an adult, Len took every Scout he counseled for a merit badge or advised for Eagle Scout under his wing and imparted his love for Scouting and the principals of Scouting upon that Scout.
Len is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara, children Robert, Pam Grayer, Diane Boler and Tim and seven grandchildren. Lens two sons are Eagle Scouts. During Lens visitation over a hundred members of the Lakota Lodge of the Order of the Arrow paid their respects to Len during a Broken Arrow Ceremony.
Len will be deeply missed by his family and the Scouting community. Lens family has asked that remembrances be made to the Northwest Suburban Council of the Boy Scouts of America or the Cancer Society.

BALOO Training
What is a BALOO? Good question! BALOO is Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation for Cub Scout leaders. BALOO training is scheduled for September 16th at Camp Reinberg. A size restriction exists for this course so register immediately.
The objective of the course is to teach and demonstrate the skills necessary to carry out a successful first time Cub Scout level camping activity. It will also explain the focus of the Cub Scout level of the Boy Scout camping program. The most important part of Cub Scouts is FUN and the program will provide information on how to achieve this objective. To take a Cub Scout unit camping several adults must be BALOO trained.
No special equipment is required only weather appropriate clothing and a mess kit and a chair. Come prepared to have fun and learn about Cub Scout Camping.
Life to Eagle Seminar
Life Scouts and their parents should plan to attend a Life to Eagle Seminar at the Council Center on Saturday, October 21 from 10 am until noon. In addition Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Committee Members and Troop Advancement personnel are encouraged to attend this seminar.
This seminar is designed to educate Scouts, Scouters and parents on the steps necessary to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. It will help you sort out the fact from the fiction of achieving the rank of Eagle. If you attended a previous seminar this will be a repeat of that information. For additional information call the Council Service Center or visit the Council web site NWSC.org.
There will be room for all. No RSVP required!
