Marie Diffley Awarded Silver Antelope

Northwest Suburban Council’s own Marie Diffley was awarded the prestigious Silver Antelope Award at the 2007 Boy Scouts of America Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. Diffley was honored for her contributions to Scouting on the Unit, District, Council and Regional levels.

The Silver Antelope Award, created in 1942, is bestowed upon those who give truly noteworthy and extraordinary service to youth. This award, one of Scouting's highest commendations, recognizes the invaluable contributions that outstanding American men and women render to youth. The National Court of Honor bestows Silver Antelope Awards on the basis of the number of registered volunteers in a region.

2007 National Fire Exploring Conference

On June 18-21, over 500 Fire Explorers from 80 posts joined together from as far as Anchorage, Alaska at the 2007 National Fire Exploring Conference hosted by the Illinois State Fire Institute in Champaign. Two posts from the NWSC participated in this exciting event: Post 28 out of Niles and Post 536 out of Park Ridge.

The youth participated in a variety of individual and team competitions ranging from “live burn” training in an 800 degree building to car extrication exercises to repelling off of a three-story tower. The NWSC was represented well by our outstanding youth and adult leaders. We would like to especially congratulate Post 28 who placed third overall in CPR and in Movement!

Exploring Safety Conference At
Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy

On Sunday, August 26, 150 Explorers ages 15-20 will be gearing up and heading out to the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) in Glenview to attend the first-ever Exploring Safety Conference organized by three local Exploring Divisions.

NIPSTA is an intergovernmental agency comprised of municipalities, fire protection districts, and other organizations located in the Chicago metropolitan area that have created a regional, state-of-the-art public safety training facility. A variety of hands-on training props are available for fire, police, and other emergency response personnel.

This day-long conference will consist of intense, hands-on training sessions specific to law enforcement and fire service training such as rapid response and ropes and repelling. In the afternoon, the youth will be challenged with a scenario mimicking a true-to-life crisis to which they will respond in teams using effective procedural methods. Numerous law enforcement and fire service professionals will be volunteering their resources and joining forces in conducting this action-packed conference. This event is sure to prove memorable to many future firefighters and law enforcement officers in the Chicagoland community!

For questions or concerns, please contact Erin Bass, Exploring Program Coordinator, at erbass@lflmail.org.

NYLT 2007

Have you ever constructed a bastila, built a trestle, participated in a geochache event, tried to boil water, or created your own patrol skit? These are just some of the events Scouts recently participated in at NYLT.

46 Scouts recently completed the Northwest Suburban Council’s National Youth Leadership Training program at Camp Lakota. Course leadership was provided by Senior Patrol leader Chris H and his staff of eight Troop Guides, two Quartermasters, and two Junior Assistant Scoutmasters. During National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), participants participated in three Troop meetings, a patrol overnight experience, several patrol leaders council meetings, patrol meetings, leadership skill sessions and numerous patrol challenges designed to

  • To give participants the confidence and knowledge to run their troop.
  • To give the participants a working knowledge ofthe concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO.
  • To give participants the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other troops.
  • To teach participants the key elements with a clear focus on HOW TO.
  • To create an atmosphere where Scouts will experience Scouting at its best.
  • To enhance the relationship between the participant and his Scoutmaster.

    To have fun!

On leaving the course each Scout completed a personal commitment to apply the leadership skills learned at the course in their unit. This commitment is shared with his Scoutmaster so they can work together to build a stronger troop. Once the Scout meets his commitment, he may wear the NWSC youth leader training arrowhead award.

Become part of NYLT 2008. We are always looking for adult leadership, (No you do not have to be at Lakota for the entire course, one or two days are great), youth staff or participants. If you are interested in helping to staff NYLT contact Paul Breider at 773-702-3986.

Information for 2008 participants will be posted on the NWSC web site in January.

NEW Boy Scout Recruiting Patch Available

The Boy Scout Division has produced a new recruiter patch incentive to support the emphasis of boy-to-boy recruiting in Boy Scouting. Boy Scouts who recruit another Boy Scout from September 1 through December 31 are eligible to receive the patch. For ease of administration, council registration personnel will distribute the patches directly upon receiving completed applications for new Boy Scouts this fall.

This patch is an excellent tool to use as we continue to communicate the importance of direct recruitment into Boy Scouting.

    October may be too late

Back in February, all units were required to consult with their Unit Commissioners and complete the new Centennial Award form.

The form, replacing the years-old "Quality Unit" form, asked unit leaders to make a series of commitments that, when completed by the end of '07, would assure them of being a Quality Unit.

An intermediate "check" by the Unit Commissioners is scheduled for October to make sure the unit commitments are being met. However, units are being asked to review their commitments now. Why?

If, for example, a troop signed up to have ASMs trained in "Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills" (IOLS), and registrations have not been made by the course deadline, the unit would not be eligible for Quality Unit status. Why?

IOLS course dates are scheduled for Oct. 3 and 13 --- and there are no more IOLS dates scheduled for '07.

And what about those other commitments, such as. advancements, membership, service projects, etc? Take a look at your Centennial Award form and see how you are doing.

The Commissioner's visit in October may be too late!

Scouter Paul Meincke Uses 850-Mile Bike Trip to Benefit NSWC

When Scouting volunteer Paul Meincke finished a 530-mile long distance ride years ago in Montana to benefit AIDS vaccine research, he probably didn't think of it as a warm-up. Nonetheless, Meincke headed off by plane in June to San Francisco to begin a trip more than 300 miles longer than that one. Meincke along with his brother, Bruce, and his neighbor, Tim Clark, rode 850 miles from June 2 to June 14. The trip took them over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, through the infamous Donner Pass, and over the salt flats of Utah into Salt Lake City.

During his time off as a Channel 7 Chicago news correspondent, Meincke has been preparing for the trip by riding 100-mile "centuries," and 62-mile "metric centuries." At their longest, these prep trips, which would seem daunting to some, take him from Joliet all the way to Bloomington. One thing Meincke couldn't prepare for without leaving the state are the massive inclines of the Sierras. He kept his legs ready with frequent 8-mile loops around Busse Woods.

Meincke was not put off by a co-worker who snickered, "Twenty dollars says he won't make it." But he did see an opportunity. "An ill-advised, and shall I say pessimistic co-worker," said Meincke. "I have not accepted the bet, but I thought I'd invite friends and colleagues to help the NWSC dining hall cause with a $20 contribution in the name of my bike adventure." Meincke raised $5,000 for, among other things, the installation of a dining hall at Camp Napowan.

The Council offers a special thanks to Paul Meincke for his unique method of raising fund for the Council’s Capital Campaign. We welcome your contribution to the Capital Campaign. For more information contact NWSC’s Stephen Taylor at the Council office.
