"Growth Through Learning" at Lord Baden-Powell University

March 7-9, 2008 will mark over a decade of excellence when the nineteenth annual Lord Baden-Powell University commences at the Salvation Army, Wonderland Camp in Camp Lake, Wisconsin. The over 250 Scout leaders that participate annually, find themselves returning home after these events truly “pumped!” Are you interested in having more fun and meeting Scout leaders from more than twenty councils throughout the Midwest? Would you like to share in the camaraderie of learning unique leadership skills with a region-wide variety of Scouting backgrounds and experiences? If the answer is “yes,” then this program is just for you!

A basic fee of $99 will provide two days of classes and two nights at the campus dorm, or for an additional $64, you can take lodging in one of our cabins. We provide pillows, sheets, blankets and towels, four great meals, and two evening cracker barrels. You’ll also enjoy our Saturday night entertainment! There are a variety of courses to choose from and patches will be given out. Shirts, Caps and Coffee Mugs will be available for purchase.

Know an Outstanding Scouter?

It is time for all NWSC Leaders to take a minute, think about what Scouter is doing an outstanding job in serving our youth, do a little research and submit the Scouter for a Silver Beaver Award.

The Silver Beaver is a national award presented at the Council level annually to a limited number of registered Scouters, based on his/her record of overall service, their community standing and a noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth within the Council.

A committee comprised of Silver Beaver volunteers will judge the nominations and submit selections for National Council approval.

The awards will be presented at the Council’s Annual Recognition Dinner.

Application forms may be obtained at the Service Center or from the Council website, www.nwsc.org under "forms."

We have many dedicated NWSC Scouters who devote time and effort over and above their registered position requirements. You may recognize their efforts by submitting more than one application. When you submit your applications please be as specific as possible concerning your nominee’s scouting and community service. Completed nominations must be at the Service Center no later than Dec. 31.


2008 Klondike

The Trans-Siberian Railway is the longest railroad in the world. It runs from Moscow to the Pacific Ocean City of Vladivostok and forms the backdrop for this years All Council Klondike.

Our Train trip through the Russian frozen tundra begins on January 18th, 19th and ends on the 20th at Camp Lakota. Troops camping should arrive on Friday with camp set-up beginning at 6:00pm on Friday night.

Events begin on Saturday morning and are tentatively set to begin with a Flag Ceremony at 9:00am. Some of Saturday’s events include Fire Building, Shelter Building, Knots and Lashings, Rope Rescue, A community lunch and of course the sled races.

Please remember the following. Pre-Registration is required. Bonus points will be awarded to units that register before January 1st. Warm weather gear including boots hats and gloves is required. Any scout not wearing the appropriate gear will be sent home to get appropriate gear. Gym shoes will are not acceptable.

Dominic Gualtieri Dominic Gualtieri

The Northwest Suburban Council and the North Woods District welcome new District Executive Dominic Gualtieri. Dominic comes to us following a three year tenure with the Connecticut Yankee Council. He is an Eagle Scout and a Brotherhood member in the Order of the Arrow. He comes with plenty of enthusiasm and ideas to insure success for the District.



Lakota Lodge Winter Banquet

The Lakota Lodge will hold its annual Winter Banquet on Thursday, December 27th from 6:00 until 10:00 p.m. at the Cotillion Banquet Facility in Palatine. All Arrowmen are encouraged to attend this event to celebrate this year’s Lodge successes and discover what plans are in store for the coming year. Registration forms are available at the Council Office or on the Council and Lodge websites. Lodge dues for 2008 can also be paid using this registration form.

Eagle Recognition Event

The Northwest Suburban Council will recognize the Eagle Class of 2007 at a breakfast reception on Saturday, January 5, 2008, at the Cotillion Banquet Facility in palatine beginning at 9:00 a.m. Also to be recognized will be Distinguished Eagle Scout Richard Politowicz. Registration forms for this event can be obtained from the Council Office or on the Council website.

Early Alert…..

All Executive and Advisory Board Members and Charter Organization Representatives are asked to mark their calendars for Wednesday, Jan. 23, the date set for the Council Annual Business Meeting. The meeting will start at 7 P. M. and will be held in at the NWSC Volunteer Service Center.

Grant from Banco Popular for $5,000

Congratulations to Learning for Life who received a grant from Banco Popular for $5,000 to support their character education and career development programs. Special thanks to Ernesto Soler, VP of Banco Popular, who helped make this possible. Along these same lines, the Central Region also granted $5,000 to support the Soccer in Scouting program—Congratulations Scoutreach!

Chicago Storm Sponsor Soccer

The Chicago Storm the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League) team has agreed to become the NWSC official “Scouting Soccer” sponsor. The Storm is entering its fifth year in the MISL where it plays all of its home games at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. During the 2006-2007 season the Storm had its first winning season and won its first postseason game.

We would like to thank the Storm for their support of the Scouting program and urge you to enjoy an upcoming Storm game. There will be a future announcement concerning a special Scout game during the upcoming season.

    Look inside this newsletter for a flyer on the upcoming Scout night with the Chicago Wolves on Saturday, November 17th. This is always a fun event with a near capacity crowd that fires the Wolves up to play their best and to provide a very entertaining game for the Scouts. We would suggest that all Scout units start promoting the game now to ensure that your Unit is well represented at the hockey game.     CAMP STAFF NEEDED!!

    The Northwest Suburban Council is looking for interested persons to serve as camp staff at Camp Napowan, Cub Scout Day Camp and Cub Scout Resident Camp at Camp Lakota for the summer of 2008. Applicants must be age 15 or older as of June 1st to qualify for a salaried position. Youth age 14 are encouraged to apply for a Counselor in Training position.

    Napowan Kickoff

    The kickoff meeting for the 2008 Napowan Summer Camp experience will take place on Saturday, December 15th beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Council Office. All Troops are encouraged to have at least one adult leader and youth leader attend this meeting to discover the improvements planned for 2008 and to provide input to help us refine the program to meet the wants and needs of the Scouts and leaders attending.
