Other sources included Project Sales at $20,000, Foundation income of $6,000, Investment income of $31,500, Other Direct income of $14,000, and Other revenue of $35,200. The exact budgeted income is targeted at $2,037,275.

Following a comprehensive two month long process with input from all NWSC Districts and major programs/activities, a review by the Council Fund Management Committee and Council Executive Committee, the Council Executive Board agreed on $2,013,174 in total expenses. Employee compensation including all full-time, part-time, and seasonal camp staff included salaries, benefits, payroll taxes, and employee related expenses of $1,187,299 compared with last year’s budget of $1,250,242.

Other expenses included Professional Fees of $21,796 for audit, legal, and accounting fees; $218,509 in Supplies for all program related activities including camporees, first aid meets, summer and day camps, and training events; $16,200 in Telephone; $31,245 in Postage and Shipping; $141,338 in Occupancy for both camps and the council office; $30,800 for Rental and Maintenance of Equipment; $41,232 in Printing and Publications; $77,611 in Travel for all business and program related items; $41,970 in Conferences and Meetings; $44,000 in support of Scoutreach and Learning for Life; $40,465 in Recognition and Awards (includes all patches for all district and council events); $27,000 in Interest Expense; $60,079 in Insurance; $27,700 for Council Charter and National Service Fee.

This budget provides for a +$24,101 net surplus by year-end 2007. This allows for a +1.2% surplus making every contribution, every donor, every expense, and every cost-savings absolutely critical to the council’s overall financial condition.

Don Hough Elected Section Chief

Don Hough Elected Section Chief NWSC Order of the Arrow member Don Hough has been elected Chief of the six Order of the Arrow Lodges for the Chicago, Illowa, Rainbow Area, Des Plaines Valley, Blackhawk Area and Northwest Suburban Councils. Don is the first Arrow man from our Council elected to this position in over thirty years.

Don is an Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow and is a freshman at Harper College. Having recently served as the NWSC Lodge Chief, Don was elected to Section Chief at the OA 2006 Conclave in September. In this one year position, Don will assist the local lodges grow their programs and membership. During his term of office Don will attend a National Order of the Arrow Planning meeting in Dallas, a Key 3 Leadership Summit at Indiana University and the National Leadership Summit as well as the Section Officers Seminar.

When asked about this latest honor, Don responded that “Scouting has provided me with some of my best friends for life and Scouting has also been the key force in shaping my life. I would like to thank everyone in the Lakota Lodge and NWSC who have helped me attain this outstanding position.”

Don is a prime example of the positive benefits that Scouting instills in our youth.

Camp Lakota pool becomes a realty

Thanks to the generous donations of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) and the Pepper Construction Company, the dream of having a top-of-the-line swimming pool and shower house at Camp Lakota is becoming a reality. The project is scheduled for completion next May in time for the 2007 Cub Scout camping season.

The heated, 25' x 50' pool is the gift of the APSA, the world's largest international trade association representing pool, spa, hot tub and recreational water industries. With a capacity of 75 swimmers, the fenced-in pool will have a depth of 3 ½ feet sloping to 4 ½ feet in the center. Complete with a surrounding concrete deck, the pool will be handicapped accessible and will be lighted for night swims.

Pepper Construction Co., a national leader in commercial construction, is funding and constructing the adjoining pool house that will feature lockers, showers and bathroom facilities.

These generous gifts ends the annual financial and logistical problems of renting a local area pool and then scheduling and transporting Cub Scouts to and from the facility. In addition, the pool will provide Boy Scouts the opportunity to earn Swimming and Lifesaving Merit Badges, a resource for BSA Lifeguard training and summer-long water fun for both Scout youth and adults.

All Scouts, Scouters, parents and professionals in the Council wish to convey their gratitude to the APSP and Pepper Construction for donating this major improvement to Camp Lakota.

Scouts and Scouters!
The American Red Cross needs you.

The American Red Cross needs you Here's a unique opportunity for NWSC Scouts and Leaders to give real service to the community while being part of a major activity.

On Saturday, Feb. 24, the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago will hold its largest annual event --- CPR Training Days 2007 --- at the Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington. Over 2,000 persons are expected to receive training in basic CPR, a skill proven to save lives.

NWSC is being asked to help by recruiting about 20 Scouts, 12 years or older, to help with: Hospitality, greeting and guiding participants (7:30 AM – (9:30 AM); or as Floor Assistants to help set-up and breakdown practice stations (10 AM - 2:30 PM).

Leaders are needed also to assist with: Instruction, Registration, Hospitality, Runners, Sales, Marketing/Communications, Fulfillment, Customer Service, Administrative and Set-up/Break-down.

Scouts under 18 must be accompanied by proper adult supervision and have a signed parental permission slip. Full field uniforms are required for Scouts and Leaders.

Scouts will earn service hours and all volunteers will receive a CPR Training Days T-shirt.

This a great opportunity for our Scouts and adult Leaders to get involved, provide some much needed help and to show the public what Scouting is all about. Pre-registration for Scouts and Scouters must be made at: www.chicagoredcross.org or call: People Resources Department at 312-729-6222

    "Switchbacks Are In"

For the first time ever, the BSA Supply Group now has uniform pants that "switchback" into shorts. These new pants include a free belt, cargo pockets, and zippers to convert from shorts into pants and back into shorts in just seconds. Made of ripstop nylon they are best suited for action and dry quickly after a rain. They even have drainage holes built into the pockets. Come to the Northwest Scout Shop to buy your "Switchbacks" today - they make great Christmas presents!

    "SURVEY SAYS..."

A recent online survey of local Boy Scouts attending Napowan revealed that the "number one" area at Napowan for summer 2006 was the Shooting Sports Area. The Scouts really enjoyed the new rifles, shotguns, electronic skeet throwers, and lighting provided through donors from the ongoing Capital Development Campaign.A gift from Banknote Capital Corporation's Tom Fitzgerald and the Arlington Heights Rotary Club specifically provided these items.

    Everybody Wins!

The Northwest Suburban Council is inaugurating a new program which is a referral based process involving adult Scouters called “Everybody Wins.” Scouting brings together some great people who do great things for our youth. Our registered Scouters also do some great things in their businesses. The Everybody Wins program introduces these dedicated volunteers to you in the light of their business life. Many provide services and products you are looking for.Knowing that you are dealing with a Scouter acknowledges that there is something special about their services.

BSA registered adult Scouters who desire to list themselves and their business in the Everybody Wins directory have agreed to not only show you scout spirit, but help the Northwest Suburban Council financially by contributing a portion of the proceeds from the sale to the Friends of Scouting program.

This program is designed to match Scouters and their friends having a need for a particular service/product with active registered Scouters who can deliver the desired service/product. This on-going referral program provides peace-of-mind to the Client, creates additional business for the Vendor, as well as generate incremental revenues to the NWSC via donations to Friends of Scouting (FOS) by the Vendor.

This is truly a Win-Win-Win situation within our Scouting Community. More information can be found at http://everybodywins.nwsc.org .
