Silver Beaver Awards, Unit Recognitions and national speaker scheduled for NWCS Annual Dinner
NWSC's Annual Recognition Dinner, "A Celebration of the Stars," scheduled for Friday, May 18, at the Cotillion in Palatine, will set a council record when 10 volunteer Leaders are presented with the Silver Beaver, the highest national honor a council may bestow.
Two additional national honors, the Silver Antelope and the William A. Hornaday Awards will be presented, along with council-level awards being made to units from all four of our districts.
Another dinner highlight will be the event's special guest, Eagle Scout Dr. R. Payne, a nationally-known speaker who serves a special advisor and consultant to the President's Council on Domestic Security in Washington, D.C.
Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver is awarded by the national council to adult volunteers for distinguished service to youth within a BSA Council. Receiving the honor will be: Ken Becker, Jay Haack, Bill Kaisling, David Kite, Bob Koscielniak, Lori Motisi, Tom Nelson, Joe Schluep, Tavis Tackett and Jim Tierney
All of our Silver Beaver recipients have extensive program backgrounds, ranging from unit service as Commissioners, to district and council positions in finance, training and communications. After being nominated and being approved by a local volunteer selection board and the Council Executive, the candidates were reviewed and approved by the National Court of Honor.
Marie Diffley, current NWSC VP-Membership and Wood Badge Course Director, was selected also by the National Council to receive the Silver Antelope, a distinguished service award created in 1942. It is granted for outstanding service to youth with the territory of a BSA region.
And Scout Matthew Bauer, Troop 392, is a repeat honoree for a rare national award. Matt, for the second year in a row, will receive the William A. Hornaday Award. It is referred to as "The Olympic Medal presented by the planet Earth" and only 1000 have been presented since its inception in 1914. This year, he is receiving a bronze award for his continued work on conservation.
Several packs and troops will be recognized as Distinctive Units for their achieving six requirements: earning Quality Unit status, having a membership growth, attendance at a Council Camp, and participation in: the current FOS campaign, Council product sales and Council and District activities.
NWSC is very fortunate in securing Dr. Payne as guest speaker. In his national office, he is in a position to know what's really going on in and outside of Washington. His discussion of behind-the-scenes subjects is interlaced with humorous antidotes about some highly-placed persons, leaving the audience laughing
.and wondering!!!
Reservation forms are available at the Service Center or on the Council's website, www.nwsc.org. Reservations and payment are due by May 11.

Scouts Say Camp Napowan is Outstanding!
84% of Scouts who attended Camp Napowan during 2006 rated their experience as Outstanding or above average. A random survey of 53 Scouts who attended Camp during 2006 also revealed that over 80% of the Scouts would like to return to Camp Napowan in the summer of 2007.
Scouts told us that they were very satisfied with the program and camping facilities at Camp Napowan with Shooting Sports, Flintlock, Swimming, Boating and Nature receiving very high marks. The Scouts rated the food service at Camp above average and were generally pleased with all the meal offerings. Napowan staff recognizes that there is room for growth in the food services and will be taking steps this summer to make the meal offerings more Scout Friendly.
When asked about the program areas they liked the most, Scouts, in a glimpse of the obvious, responded shooting sports followed by Flintlock and the waterfront. What Scout doesnt want to shoot a gun, go swimming or boating or have fun at the always active Flintlock.
The survey also provided more detailed information for the Camp staff on acceptance of merit badge programs and suggestions for improvements in future years. The survey will be utilized to improve all aspects of the Camp Napowan experience this year and beyond.
See you at Camp Napowan this summer for an OUTSTANDING experience.
Scouting for Food 2007
The Northwest Suburban Council in a collaborative effort with the Post Office and local community food banks, will collect food for the hungry during the annual Scouting for Food Good Turn.
Packs, Troops, Teams and Crews should pick up their Scouting for Food door hangers at their roundtable and distribute them on the week of May 6th. On Saturday, May 12, the food can be picked up from the donors and taken to the designated food banks. All the details can be found at the your roundtables or by contacting your District's Scouting for Food coordinator.
The volunteer hours associated with the Scouting for Food program can be logged into Good Turn for America by logging into: http://goodturnforamerica.org/.
The Boy Scouts of America teaches the value of community service in all of its programs and the importance of helping others. Doing a Good Turn Daily is a cornerstone of the Scouting program. During the lastyears, Scouts have collected more than 23 million cans of food for local community food banks.
Your pack, troop, crew or post can help us help the hungry this spring to help replenish the shelves of our local food banks. Help us promote this event and get involved by making announcements in your local place of worship, through a local community newsletter and through the families of your unit.
The purpose of Scouting for Food is to; help meet the needs of the hungry; and to foster growth by enabling Scouts to experience the principle of the "Daily Good Turn."

Jambo 2010! It's a GO!
Planning for the 2010 Jamboree, marking the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in America, can now go full speed ahead.
On April 5, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit dismissed a lawsuit filed by the ACLU against the Dept. of Defense seeking to end military support for the huge event because of Scouting's requirement for "duty to God."
The result --- funding and support, as authorized by a 1972 Congressional statute, may proceed. And, we may start our planning for this "once in a lifetime experience." Have you thought about being a Scoutmaster or an ASM for Jambo 2010?
