Cub Scouts Totem Badges Recalled due to Lead Paint Content
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced a voluntary recall of the Cub Scout Totem Badges measure 4½ inches x 3 inches with a square portion measuring 2Ό inches x 2Ό inches. The Boy Scout emblem is printed on the badge along with a wolf and bear. PROGRESS TOWARD RANKS is also printed on the badge. The surface paints on the badges contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.
Parents should immediately remove the badges from clothing and keep the badges away from children. Contact the Council Scout Shop for additional information
Scouting around the Archdiocese
Its that time of year, again, to prepare for the holidays ahead as well as the annual Scout Sunday Religious Emblems Ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral in February, 2008.
Nominations for the adult St. George Religious Emblem are due no later than December 1, 2006. Nomination forms are available on the web at www.nccs-bsa.org. The Archdiocese can only present 14 St George Awards in 2007. Similar to the Silver Beaver, the Archdiocese can only present one St. George for every 20 units under Catholic auspices. Please forward the completed nominations to Deacon Al Memmel, 100 S. Greenwood, Park Ridge, IL 60068.
Is your unit a BSA Quality Unit and has a Catholic Charter Partner? If yes, your unit may qualify for the Pope Paul VI Catholic Quality Unit Award. Applications for this award are on the web at www.nccs-bsa.org, too. Deadline for submitting this application is December 1.
All youth working on Ad Altare Dei or Pope Pius XII who will be presented the emblems in February must complete the faith journey by participating in the Board of Review held around December 1, 2007. Ask your counselor facilitator for more information.
Plan now to join with all at the emblem and award recieptants at Religious Emblems Recognition Dinner immediately following the Cathedral Ceremony.
Reminder, the Catholic Committee on Scouting emblems sales office has moved To 810 West Montrose, Chicago. New phone number: 773 755 7259.
Know an Outstanding Scouter?
It is time for all NWSC Leaders to take a minute, think about what Scouter is doing an outstanding job in serving our youth, do a little research and submit the Scouter for a Silver Beaver Award.
The Silver Beaver is a national award presented at the Council level annually to a limited number of registered Scouters, based on his/her record of overall service, their community standing and a noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth within the Council.
A committee comprised of Silver Beaver volunteers will judge the nominations and submit selections for National Council approval.
The awards will be presented at the Councils Annual Recognition Dinner.
Application forms may be obtained at the Service Center or from the Council website, www.nwsc.org under "forms."
We have many dedicated NWSC Scouters who devote time and effort over and above their registered position requirements. You may recognize their efforts by submitting more than one application. When you submit your applications please be as specific as possible concerning your nominees scouting and community service. Completed nominations must be at the Service Center no later than Dec. 31.

Chicago Wolves Sponsor NW News
The Wolves have made this issue and the next five issues of the NW News possible through their generous sponsorship of this publication. We would like to thank the Wolves for their support of the Scouting program in the Northwest Suburbs.
Look inside this newsletter for a flyer on the upcoming Scout night with the Chicago Wolves on Saturday, November 17th. This is always a fun event with a near capacity crowd that fires the Wolves up to play their best and to provide a very entertaining game for the Scouts. We would suggest that all Scout units start promoting the game now to ensure that your Unit is well represented at the hockey game. All of our Wolf rank Cub Scouts should attend to support their namesakes. We will see you at the rink!
