Order of Arrow's Annual Haunted Hike
Are you ready to be scared!

Witches and all types of Goblins have been confirmed to be in attendance at the Order of the Arrow's 21th Annual Haunted Hike on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 & 27, at The Methodist Camp Ground in Des Plaines.

The Order of the Arrow's Haunted Hike Youth Chairman, stated that the OA really dug deep to find a non-perfect set of ghosts, witches, ghouls and other weirdoes, complete with screams and moans, to unman the scary trail. "We're daring our NWSC Leaders and Scouts of all ages to "venture" into this maze of non-reality activities and be prepared to be frightened. They can be sure we won't let them down….while they're living!"

As in previous years, the event promises to provide a lot of Halloween-type fun for Scouts, their families and the general public.

Besides featuring a Haunted Hike through the creepy darkness and discovering (or being discovered by) unknown monsters, ghouls and half-life forms, the event will feature several period ghost story tellers, food concessions and face painting.

Uniformed Scouts and Leaders will be admitted for only $4.00; children, ages 5-12, for $5.00; and adults/children, 13 and over, for $6.00. Plan to attend and get into the right "spirit!" as the Hike is scheduled to scare from 7:00 to 10:30 pm on Friday and 6:00 to 10:30 pm on Saturday. New this year is a Special Flashlight Hike for our younger friends on Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm that is designed to AVOID the fright.

Additional information may be obtained at the Service Center or at www.nwsc.org or www.lakotalodge.org.

Exploring Safety Conference

At
Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy

On Sunday, August 26, over 75 Explorers ages geared up and headed out to the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) in Glenview to attend the first-ever Exploring Safety Conference organized by three local Exploring Divisions. NIPSTA is an intergovernmental agency comprised of municipalities, fire protection districts, and other organizations located in the Chicago metropolitan area that have created a regional, state-of-the-art public safety training facility. More than 30 Fire and Law Enforcement professionals volunteered their time and resources to make this action-packed conference a huge success.

This day-long conference consisted of intense, hands-on training sessions specific to law enforcement and fire service training including ropes and repelling, search and rescue, rapid deployment stairs, and rapid deployment room entry. In the afternoon, the youth were challenged with two scenarios mimicking true-to-life crises to which they responded in teams using effective procedural methods. The Explorers also participated in a golf cart driving test while wearing beer goggles that was conducted by the Illinois State Police; this gave everyone some good laughs! Possibly the climax of the day was a special visit by the U.S. Coast Guard; who flew their helicopter in and deployed one of their divers onto the driving pad. He stayed for about 30 minutes and talked with all of the youth, while the helicopter circled the site. Overall, we had a great response from the youth and adult leaders and are excited to make this conference an annual event.

    Chicago Wolves Sponsor NW News

The Wolves have made this issue and the next five issues of the NW News possible through their generous sponsorship of this publication. We would like to thank the Wolves for their support of the Scouting program in the Northwest Suburbs.

Look inside this newsletter for a flyer on the upcoming Scout night with the Chicago Wolves on Saturday, November 17th. This is always a fun event with a near capacity crowd that fires the Wolves up to play their best and to provide a very entertaining game for the Scouts. We would suggest that all Scout units start promoting the game now to ensure that your Unit is well represented at the hockey game. All of our Wolf rank Cub Scouts should attend to support their namesakes. We will see you at the rink!

Leave No Trace— Its not just for High Adventure

The principals of Leave No Trace (LNT) apply to Scouts at every level, from Cub Scout outings, to Boy Scout campouts, to Venture crews on high adventure treks. They are principals embraced by the BSA and in tune with the Scout Law and the Outdoor Code.

This course is designed to introduce the principals of LNT to Scouters so that they can become familiar with the principals and their application. You can learn how to be responsible Scouters and good citizens of this precious Earth. Our course is designed to be hands on. You will spend your day with a small group of like minded Scouters learning about each of the core principals of LNT. Realistic exercises reinforce each principal and its importance. Even the trail lunch (provided) is an exercise in applying LNT principals. The course will be held at easy to get to Camp Dan Beard in Wheeling (4 miles west of Deerfield on Portwine Road, south of Lake Cook Road and north of Dundee Road). This is a single day course that begins at 8:00 a.m. and should conclude by 4:30 or 5:00 p.m.

If you participate in outdoor activities with your Pack, Troop or Crew this course is for you. The course is open to all adult Scout leaders, to any registered youth (age 16+) and to registered youth age 14-15 with the written recommendation of their Scoutmaster or Advisor.

Due to the need to plan for lunch and for the amount of materials needed, registration is recommended. Walk-ins will be welcome however course materials and lunch may not be available. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of our inaugural LNT course.
