(CNN) -- A teenager described as a Boy Scout saved Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom from a knife attack Tuesday, a presidential spokesman said.
The assailant "aimed at the president from about 10 feet away, but another young boy -- about 15 years old -- maybe one feet away jumped to prevent him," spokesman Mohamed Shareef said.
The boy "came in the way and grabbed the knife," Shareef told The Associated Press. "One brave boy saved the president's life."
The attacker's knife was wrapped in a national flag, Shareef said. "The knife touched the president's shirt but not his body," he said.
The teen, whose name was given as Jaisham, is a Boy Scout, Shareef told AP. Jaisham received a hand wound and was flown to the capital of Male for treatment because he could not move some of his fingers, Shareef told AP. Gayoom was unhurt, Shareef said.
The Maldives is a nation of islands in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India. The president was visiting one of those islands, Hoarafushi, to inaugurate an energy project, Shareef said. Police arrested the attacker, he said
The "Once-in-a-lifetime" event is coming.
Two years may seem like a long time, but now is the time to start thinking about attending the National Jamboree at Ft. A.P. Hill, Va. in July, 2010, the 100th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America.
Scott Ratter, Chairman of NWSC's highly successful '05 Jambo Committee, has agreed again to head up the council's Jambo 2010 preparations.
"We're in the process of forming a committee of experienced Jambo Scouters who will guide our recruiting, logistical, financial and promotional efforts," stated Ratter. "The upcoming Jambo celebrating Scouting's birthday will be fantastic and we want our Scouters and Scouts to start planning to attend the big party."
As additional details are received from the National Council, Scott and his committee will share them with all of us. In the meantime, give some serious consideration to attend this "Once-in-a-lifetime" event.

A "Jump Start" for 2008
On Feb. 7, NWSC will hold a major fund-raising breakfast for corporate and community leaders at Meridian Banquets in Rolling Meadows.
The free event combines two on-going council programs, the annual, community Friends of Scouting (FOS) gift giving and the "Hometown Scouting" informational initiative started in 2007.
As part of the overall FOS program, the Community FOS provides corporate and community leaders an opportunity to make a pledge to aid the council in meeting the 2008 financial goals necessary to support Scouting in our northwest suburbs.
"Hometown Scouting" was started early in 2007 and consists of council volunteers and professional staffers giving bi-monthly briefings to business, community and religious leaders. These guests and others are being invited to attend the breakfast and learn more about all of our youth programs.
A one-hour agenda includes live presentations, a new, 10-minute video, "Growing to Serve," and a request for a commitment, either in time or in financial assistance, from the attendees.
All registered Scouters are urged to invite 3 or 4 guests to the event and to volunteer to be a table host.
There is no registration fee. However, a reservation for all attendees is required by January 24th. Meridian Banquets is located at 1201 Algonquin Rd., in Rolling Meadows. Reception and registrations will take place from 7:00 - 7:30 AM, followed by breakfast and presentations From 7:30 to 8:30 AM.
Let's get behind this "Jump Start for 2008." Invite guests who can help Scouting.

The Annual Meeting in January was the finale of Rich Politowiczs tenure as Council President. Rich had held the volunteer for two years during which significant accomplishments were made and directions for the future identified. Significant among his successes was the completion of plans and other preparations for the pool and troop cabin for Camp Lakota and the dining hall for Camp Napowan. We wish Rich well and look forward to his continued sage advice.

Boy Scout License Plates
As of this morning, December 13th, the Secretary of State's office has received only 150 inquiries for the Boy Scout License plate statewide. In
order for the state to order production, 850 interest inquiries are needed.
I understand that the Secretary of State's Office has requested a rule amendment for specialty plates, which is expected to come into play by the end of January 2008.At that time, rather than 850 interest inquiries needed today, they will require 1,500 commitments with a deposit of about
$25 each.
If we want this plate to fly, we need to make a bit of a push now.
The Eagle Scout plate is being treated like the military honor plates, and does not need a minimum order. It will likely be available in February.
For those in your council who might be interested in that plate, it would not hurt us for them to send in the interest form for the Scout plate

NWSC Cub Leader granted national award
It is with great pleasure that NWSC announces that Russ Talbot, Cubmaster of Pack 266, MC in Troop 32 and VC-Cubs in North Woods District, has been selected to receive the prestigious St. George Religious Emblem.
Talbot, was selected by the Catholic Committee on Scouting from a list of candidates in the Chicago Archdiocese. He will be the only Leader from NWSC to receive the honor at the annual Archdiocese Scout Sunday Catholic Religious Emblems Ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral on Sunday, February 24.
Qualifications for the award include not only Russ' positions in Scouting, but also his efforts to encourage the spiritual development of Catholic Youth in Scouting, his positions held in his parish and his positions/achievements in business, civic, religious, education and fraternal organizations.
Russ will be in good company at the annual event. Cardinal Francis George will be receiving the national honor also. In addition, NWSC Scouts and units will be receiving their Pope Paul VI Catholic Quality Unit Awards, Ad Altare Dei Emblems and Pope Paul XII Emblems.
Congratulations to Russ who believes in the 12th point of the Scout Law: "A Scout is Reverend."
---- His Eminence is not only receiving the St. Geore Emblem but also presenting the awards as a sign of his support for what Scouting stands for and the good it offers to the young men. -----
